Ork Boy Hangin' off a Trukk

I'm trying to explain the different factions to some friends of mine as they have show some interest in starting 40k.

This is how I understand them:

Adepta Sororita: Battle Nuns in Space
Orks: Orcs in Space
Eldar: Elves in Space
Dark Eldar: Dark Elves in Space
Necrons: Egyptian Undead in Space
Chaos Space Marines: Evil Dudes in Space
Chaos Daemons: Evil Daemons in Space
Grey Knight: Warrior Monks/Clerics in Space
Inquisition: The Inquisition in Space
Imperial Guard: World War I and II in Space
Tau: Feudal Japan in Space
Tyranids: Zerg

Space Marines have several chapters that play very differently outlined below. Otherwise, they can be summed up as... well, Space Marines.
Blood Angels: Sorta Vampires in Space
Black Templars: Crusaders/Templar Knights in Space
Dark Angels: Regular Knights in Space
Space Wolves: Vikings in Space
White Scars: Mongols in Space

I also sent them this:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MeVxKZBOfM‎

Also also, Tau can also be described as "Fish People with Howitzers in Space", and "Avartar: The Last Air Bender is Space" (namely because their entire history revolves around the phrase "everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked")

Am I missing anything?

Sounds like you just took everyone elses comical but very vague interpretation and just threw it at your friend's. If you want them to get a feel and sense of the faction's, you're gonna have to be more specific and more convincing than saying Orcs and Elves in space. There's more depth to them than that. For starters, explain to your friend's why they're fighting

I will forever remain humble because I know I could have less.
I will always be grateful because I remember I've had less.

Between

I'll just expand on your points a little.

Adeptus Mechanicus: Cybernetic monks with guns and robots.
Adepta Sororitas: Super-elite nuns with guns. And flamethrowers.
Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard: Ordinary soldiers with laser guns.
Orks: Football hooligans with guns in space.
Eldar: Psychic Ninja Space Elves on the verge of extinction.
Dark Eldar: BDSM Ninja Space Elves.
Maynark Necrons: Undead Pyramid Head in Space
Necrons: Egyptian Undead in Space
Chaos Space Marines: Corrupted super-soldiers with power armour and magic.
Chaos Daemons: Eldritch abominations that corrupt reality by their very existance.
Grey Knights: Genetically modified Super-soldier wizards in power armour.
Inquisition: The Inquisition in Space
Imperial Knights: Giant robots / Evangelions / Jaegers.
Tau: Physically weak communists with super high technology and giant robots / patlabors / gundams.
Tyranids: All-consuming bee people. The scariest parts of Starship Troopers and Alien, with a bit of Yuuzan Vong thrown in for good measure.

Space Marines have several chapters that play very differently outlined below. Otherwise, they can be summed up as... well, Space Marines.
Blood Angels: Rennaisance vampire super-soldiers in power armour with flamethrowers.
Black Templars: Crusader super-soldiers in power armour with hate..
Carcharodons: Sharky super-soldiers in power armour with stabby things.
Dark Angels: Knight Templar super-soldiers in power armour with secrets.
Imperial Fists: Stubborn super-soldiers in power armour with good discipline.
Mantis Warriors: Sneaky super-soldiers in power armour with fortune tellers.
Minotaurs: Brutal super-soldiers in power armour with really nice stuff.
Space Wolves: Viking werewolves in Space riding giant wolves.
White Scars: Mongolian super-soldiers in power armour riding giant motorbikes.
Ultramarines: Elite Roman super-soldiers in power armour.

Incidentally, it was the Air Nation that initiated the Montau. They just had Fire Nation allies.

There are other Marines with special rules, but I can't think of them right now.

Spoiler:
Space Marines: Starship troopers mixed with knights.

Tau: Starship troopers but more highly advanced.

Tyranids: Starship troopers bugs.

Imperial Guard: Starship troopers.

Blood Angels: Starship troopers mixed with knights and vampires.

Orks: Alien road warrior

Space Wolves: Starship troopers mixed with vikings.

Adepta Sororitas: Starship troopers mixed with nuns

Necrons: Terminator except not really.

Imperial Knights: Titanfall except not a ripoff of COD

Eldar: Starship troopers with elves.

Dark Eldar: Starship troopers with elves and snuff porn.

Chaos Daemons: Starship troopers with demons. Wait...

Chaos Space Marines: Starship troopers except with hardcore rocker knights.

For real, though, just give a brief summary of each faction without relying on comparisons alone. You are doing the factions a disservice.
