Hey dakkanites
So what do you prefer: 30k(great crusade horus heresy) or 40k and why.
Personally 30k is my thing. I love having 18 legions instead of thousand chapters and having the primarchs at the forefront is ace. I also like how the marines army religious or zelous( except the word bearers) and how the emperor isn't thought of as a god. And the heresy is such a great story.

I like 30K, too.
I like how it gives a look into what kinds of tech the Imperium had back then (Volkite weapons, Sicaran tanks, etc.) that are almost nonexistent in 40K.
And the Legion army list itself plays very differently from current marines, making it feel like a different game. I just hope FW doesn't slow down too much in releasing the books. To me, FW still remains the last bastion of creativity within GW.

Fluff-wise I think I prefer 40k, at least the more horror focused 40k from back in the day.

Rules wise 30k, no contest. Ditto for game style - everyone is a massive horde of dudes charging forward to smash face

I echo that statement. 40K has better fluff, but GW should be embarrassed at how much better Forgeworld is at making a game.

But frankly regular GW doesn't give a rip about the game, its a marketing strategy for selling their models.

I started 40k because of the DV set but I started to read the books based on the HH books. If it wasn't for the cost of buying a TON of forge world models, I'd have gone 30k all the way.

I like them both to be honest. They both are in a world of their own therefor are different when comparing the too. 30k was all out clap and vanguard while 40k is more grimdark. It's a tough call yo favour one over the other. They both needveachother to be complete well that's how it feels yo he anyways

I'll go for 40K. Feels like there's much, much more going on in the setting at that point. That's not to say that 30K's boring or anything, though.

40K. I like how Imperium is insane, declining, dystopic theocracy. Big shining heroes do not appeal to me. That being said, some of the FW's 30K models are really nice, but fortunately most of them can easily be used in 40K as well.

i just feel 40k is a bit stale at times, that all of the fighting going on is for nothing. i did how ever hear a rumor that guilliman might make his wa back to 40k...

Space nuns may or may not have influenced my answer somewhat.

Was it from that WD article? I've seen it, and all it is is a WD person saying that he thinks the Guilliman is healing. That's not really an official teaser or anything, just some employee's opinion.

30k books are incredible, good balance, awesome gameplay.

If I started over, I'd just do 30k

Istavan 3 and 5 were pretty dark. There was one passage I was reading where some loyalist marines were hiding from a chaos warband and they had to snap the neck of one loyalists that was almost coming to. They did this to prevent being caught and if that's not dark enough

40k. Because in the darker and grimer future of 30k, there is only space marines.
And that is seriously boring.

Why not both?

I'm perfectly fine with using legion and admech lists in normal 40k.

All the more fun for me when a no-name necron lord MSS' Horus up all game long.

If you enjoy a game with a choice between army A or army A, giving you an endless string of mirror matches, go 30K.

If you enjoy paying twice as much for GW models but with no bits and cast in a worse material for wear, and no discounts (unless you turn to recasters), go 30K.

If you enjoy having your story pre-written and its outcome known, go 30K.

If you enjoy a balanced ruleset by virtue of everybody playing the same army, go 30K.

If you enjoy the aethetics of 30K, grab an army and use it for both 30K and 40K.

If you haven't guessed by now, I consider a game of space marines vs space marines every time the dullest experience imaginable.

I very nearly started a thread this morning asking why so many people seem to love 30k!

Personally, I hate the look of the minis and find the literature offensively badly written.

And, of course, we know how it ends!

Ah, okay.

Yeah, still don't think that'll happen. A Primarch coming back seems like it'd be too positive and too eventful for 40K, which is grimdark and doesn't really move forwards. This particular Primarch is also a masterful statesman, so would probably be too beneficial for the Imperium to be allowed to come back.

Yeah, Isstvan was pretty dark. Especially the drop site massacre when the loyalists think that they're getting loads of reinforcements, only for said reinforcements to turn traitor on them.

However, I'd still say that 40K has 30K comprehensively beat in terms of grimdark. In 40K the Imperium is more hellish and superstitious, the Tyranids and Necrons are around, and Chaos is making another big push and this time there's no gurantee that they won't succeed in crippling the Imperium.

It is easy to be balanced when the game is solely full of a bunch of space marine legions armed with very similar gear and weapons. Of course if GW main did the game and not Forgeworld there would be zero balance like between the Space Marine, Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Space Wovles codecies.
