I recently decided to start on my orks, but I wanted to do them in a non traditional look. I envisioned a type of ash wastes planet, that was due to the amount of vehicles and the like left to rust away, sort of like a vehicle/armor junkyard that the boyz had settled on, but the size of a planet. I also didn't want to do your typical green orks, my 6 year old son told me i should do them like Kratos from god of war, as he had seen a boy painted in that same style and loved it. So that was decided. I don't have very much done yet, just the warboss, a komando nob, 5 burnas, and snikrot. But here is the current state. The powders will be more subtle once i apply the final layer of varnish to seal them in, so they look a bit too strong at the moment. What do you all think?

Here is the warboss

Komando Nob

Snikrot

and one of the burna boyz

The rest of the current crop of pictures can be seen in the gallery. The reds are very pronounced from the powders in these pictures, I need to really build a proper light box ><

Yeah, the yellow lighting really prevents us from seeing the actual colours you have used.

You don't need a light box, you need to find your camera's white balance setting. And change it.

I will definately check on the camera's settings tomorrow. My desk lamp is a huge part of the problem though, as the pics i'm posting below show. Just finished up my Big Mek with S.A.G this evening.

Again, I wanted the army to look extremely dirty. So with a bit better picture of this chap at least, thoughts?

And I just finished changing/painting heads on my Warboss. Better picture as well.

The Mek and the Boss

A bit more of a close up of the head, really pleased with how it turned out.

I'm not feeling the green spray over on the sag. Otherwise they look good.

I like them.
Tonally and stylistically it's far closer to a lot of GWs current gritty artwork than how they paint their models.
Good job, would love to see more.

Looking good. I like the lighting on the Shokk Attack Gun, but I think it would look better if you made it a bit brighter closer to the gun itself and made the balls a much brighter green.

With taking photos, for most cameras you're best off NOT using a white background for photographing miniatures, as the camera will adjust it's exposure to make the white properly exposed and then the model which is darker ends up under exposed.

You're best off using a background that is similar in brightness to the model itself, and something that is not a single colour but has some gradients. That way you'll get a picture that is a more lifelike representation of the model.

Love the look, but I feel you should get one or two extra spots of colour on them - they look and feel like orange dustballs to me. Maybe some rusted colours, of their old clan?

Bump as i've finished looting my Imperial Knight. Also finished a new warboss but haven't taken any pictures as of yet. So here comes pics of the Knight!

They aren't the best pictures around, as i'm still learning our new camera, but I believe they get the idea across. And I understand that some people will or will not like the glow, I personally like a strong contrast for that. Just my taste i guess.

Really liking the looted Knight!!!

One thing that I think would make all your models with source lighting look even better is you should mix some white with your green, get a nice light color and do a thin line or circle in the middle of your lighting. I think this very easy step would make it look more realistic and it would take like 2 secs!

Basically what I am saying is I think the green needs one or two more lighter shades of green in the center, almost coming to white. That way it looks the brightest at the source and then all the bouncing light will look better, but great job on your rusting and worn effects!

That's great work, the knight is particularly excellent! Gritty with more realism than your average ork. Well done sir!

Great job so far. Orks are at their best when they are dirty.

Also I love anything that looks like its glowing. Great stuff.

Third looted knight I've seen (surprised there aren't more) and I think this one's the best. Knackered, rusty, looted, and that lighting is wonderful. Job's a good 'un!

Thanks again for the comments guys. I really do need to be "unlazy", and add a brighter green to the centers of the glow for sure, just was happy to have it at that stage and haven't went back and touched them up. Glad you guys like the knight!

Been a while since I updated this with any new models. So here we go, I finished up my Orkanaut today, minus some hot glue work on the "gore". Really .liked the kit overall though. Minus the odd placement of the legs and the prego look.

So there you have it. My finished 'naut. C&C Welcome!

Its a vallejo pigment powder, pretty simple really. Just put it on heavy and use hairspray afterwards to lock it in. Then clear coat as normal with a flat varnish. Color would be your preference. Glad you like them btw
