I like the look of vampire counts but space Marines seem easier to play as.

Well first question is do you want to play Fantasy or Grimdark?

Are you trying to decide between Fantasy and 40k or are you referring to Blood Angels with the Vampire reference?

Well, it really depends on which game system you're interested in playing. You should check out some battle reports for both games to see how they work, to give you a better idea of which one suits your tastes better. And then, you'll also want to look into which game is more popular in your area. Fantasy can be great and all, but if there's nobody to play with, perhaps 40k is the better choice.

But seriously they're completely different armies for completely different systems. I'd say dabble a little in both, make an army for fantasy and 40k.

Pick whichever looks coolest(to your eye) worry about the other stuff later.

That is my Imperial Guard Army with Sister of Battle Allies done in a vampire counts theme. I would love to see someone do something similar with Blood Angels.

Can get expensive, but you generally don't need full Vampire Counts sets, just buy the bits off ebay.

Blood angels are vampire like but have space marine elements in them, they are also getting a new codex some time soon.

between fantasy and 40k, I'd go with whichever system is more supported by the local gamers in your area.

However, I wouldnt choose an army just because it seems "easier" You should go with the army that seems like it would be more fun. Also the aesthetics should play a big part in your decision.

Vampire Counts As.

It is the most flexible army for proxy purposes, if you want to try out different rules and lists.

Two different systems. Do you like swords and blocks of infantry, or guns and loose squads?

How much money do you have? How much free time? Which game (Fantasy or 40K) is more popular in your local area?

Only when you have answered these questions can you begin to answer the question of Vampires or Space Marines.

If you don't have a lot of money, the answer is Space Marines. They still require the smallest number of models to get an army on the board.

If you don't have a lot of free time to assemble and paint models, the answer is also Space Marines (and 40K in general... Fantasy armies require a lot of time spent on assembly).

If 40K is more popular in your area it will be easier to get a game of 40K in than it will be to get a game of WHFB. So the answer is, you guessed it, Space Marines (with the answer being VC if your gamer crowd prefers WHFB to 40K).

Now, the wide-open nature of SM means you can design an army with a Vampire Counts theme (or just play Blood Angels) if you really like vampires but nobody near you plays Fantasy. Conversely, it is harder to design a Vampire Counts army with a Space Marine theme, but I suppose you could try it. You'd better be a right diva with green stuff, though.

If you have too much money and too much free time, the answer is to play both (assuming your local game scene has equal 40k and WHFB opportunities).
