I don't go to tournaments, and tried to start this thread in the tournament discussion room, only to have it deleted because apparently it has to be about a SPECIFIC tournament, which is dumb if you just want to start a conversation on things like how would you like to see a tournament run. Anyway the changes to the game specifically in the last few months have pretty much killed my interest. I just want to see if most tournaments are allowing things like forgeworld, or the stupidly op units from escalation and stronghold assault, and weather they are fostering different ideas in list buildings and bringing about a golden age of play, or just overall crapping on the already bad balance of armies, with revenant titans and void shields ruling the day, all day, erry day.
So from what you have seen of tournaments allowing these things, good or bad? I can tell you my FLGS had a tournament with the new stuff a month ago with 24 attendees....... the next months tournament had 6 people show up, surprise all own super heavies and brought them. It was called for lack of entry fee.

FoB was my last big one; invitational was your expected mixture of Tau/Eldar, Eldar/Tau, Tau/Tau,... so on, so forthe. The Open was a better mix, but the top tables were still Daemons, Centurion Star, White Scars Gravy Spam, etc.
Went to an RTT and the top tables were a better mix of White Scars, Daemons, Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Sisters of Battle (me!). The meta was a bit all over the place there, but a lot of rules disputes still popped up. Had a lot of lopsided games, to boot.
Last local tourney was where I "cheated" and brought SoB/IG/Inq list when I could only have one "ally" slot (I was invited the day before and didn't know there were restrictions past Stronghold/Escalation). Didn't place and most of my opponents didn't care because they realized it was an actual fluffy army (to some extent, still tooled for competitive play). They were just happy to see SoB.
It seems like a lot of the top players are switching to Death Star builds (Jetseer, Beast, Centurion, O'Vesa, etc.). Each tournament has to release at least which content is being played. It gets a big frustrating.

so the ones you have gone to haven't had stronghold, or escalation. Anyone have them added to their local tourneys/campaigns and want to chime in? Is it as dominating as it seems?

Same old same old. Yesterdays big NZ tournament had 40% Tau or Eldar, and those armies took two of the top three (with Daemons in third).
Stronghold Assault and Escalation are starting to take hold though, which will be interesting.

I have seen some previously local stores (in a new scene) try it, but no one really was tooled up for it.
I had a Revenant Titan waiting, though. I had a cadre of folks who said they'd bounce if they saw me walk in with it.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it. Went from 24 players in a tournament to 6 showing up, not a good turn of events. The store owner has banned them from any regular tournaments, there will be special ones only including the rules a few times a year. But some damage was already done. People that showed up religiously for the last 4 months have stopped coming.

Tau, Eldar, Taudar and their yahtzee playstyle hurt thegame far more frequently and deeply than superheavies. in my opinion anyway.

I wasn't going to do it to make friends, rather prove a point since the store owner didn't seem to care what the more hardcore tournament folks were telling him.
I'm probably playing Warmachine for awhile. Tighter rules.

I'm seeing tourneys with more variety. I went to a 32 player, 2 day event in Colombia, SC (SCARAB) and the players voted in what they wanted to use: 40K Approved FW and Character Data Slates were the only additional items. Escalation/Stronghold Assault and dataslates were banned.
Local Tourneys tend to vary month to month to give folks the options to play things: last month was a Highlander styled event which was fun. This month they are allowing Stronghold Assault, no allies. Next month will be 2000 points, dual FOC, Escalation/Stronghold Assault. There is one player who really does not like Escalation, but he offered to TO the event instead.
GW pretty much has given us all the toys to use; we just now decide what we want to play/not play and it seems to be working out ok. However, I believe if the TO were to insist on running an everything goes as the defacto standard, he would lose players as it is not to everyone's liking.
Add in driving to some other semi local events and there's enough variety now to keep my interest level up.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Playing competitive 40k is as fun as you make it. If you show up with a tier 3 army and get tabled, that's no one else's fault but your own.
If you don't like a tournament's rules, don't attend it.

We had a tourney recently that allowed pretty much everyithng apart from Forge World.
4 people showed up...
The TO is going to be banning Escalation and Stronghold Assault next time.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Well, we play tournaments on a bimonthly basis, 12 to 20 players, quite heterogeneous, with armies like Daemons, Tau, Necrons, and Eldar taking the lead.

I'm likely off to a tournament at my FLGS today - not playing, just going there to scope out the local meta and chat since I'm looking to get back into the hobby. I'm curious what it will be like.
EDIT
The local tournament had the Top 4 armies Space marines and Chaos Daemons, with Marines taking the top spot with a White Scars/Space Wolf army with Khan and a CM on bike, a Command Squad w/4 Grav-guns, two Tactical squads in Rhinos, 2 Stormtalons, a Stalker and 2 Thunderfire Cannons, with a SW Rune Priest and 5 Grey Hunters.
