I feel a bit silly posting about this, but I wanted to see if anyone else has done this. I played WM/H for a couple years. I did a lot of faction hopping (thanks Bartertown and Dakka Swap Shop!) before settling on Cygnar. I wasn't super excited about the models, but I loved the rules for the whole faction and all the neat little tricks they pull. The game was really easy for me to pick up and I think I was pretty good at it. There was one problem: No one played Warmachine in my area.
I mean there was a guy who used to in MK1...
So I had to drive any time I wanted to play, but my schedule just DID NOT line up with the next-nearest game store's PP night. I didn't try too hard to press my LGS to get into the game, so I became increasingly frustrated and ended up getting rid of my Cygnarmy for some 40k (the LGS' game of choice).
Fast forward 3 months and I really really missed the 2d6 system and clearly defined rules. So I updated my War Room app and just played around with some lists. Then I bought the Retribution battlegroup. Now it looks like a few others around here are thinking about picking up the game.
I'm not looking to 40k hate or anything. I just wanted to know if any of you have bailed on a game before only to say "yeah, that was actually a pretty awesome game, i miss it" and start playing again.

I was introduced to Magic the Gathering back in 1993 one summer when I was home from college visiting some friends. I thought it was an interesting game, and I enjoyed playing it. When I heard my friends talking about how the company was going to start releasing booster packs, my thought process was, "Oh boy, I see where this is going to go. I can't afford to keep buying stuff to play the game while I'm in college."
Imagine my chagrin 10 years or so later when I run into some people playing the game at an FLGS and discover that a lot of those older cards sold for thousands of dollars.
Sigh. If only I had just gotten really obsessive about the game for a couple of years before quitting....

Ironically, 40k. Dumped a few thousand dollars of stuff for very little in a 'purge' about a year ago and I'm now in the process of rebuilding. I'm mostly coming back for modeling/painting reasons, but that doesn't make it any less expensive.

Yes. Two times.
1. HeroQuest - Had the game in mint condition with a few expansions. I was in college and we went to Toys R Us to look for Magic cards (early 90s, MtG hadn't been out long). I found a clearance shelf that probably had 30 copies of HeroQuest for $9 and stacks of the expansions for $5 each. Wish I bought the whole lot. It's not really that great of a game, but I wish I kept my copy for nostalga purposes.
2. Mordheim - Still have the rules, but sold off about 6 or 7 warbands years ago.

When I got back in to the hobby a few years ago, I bought some 40k to play with a few mates.
Then my new gaming group all decided to go WHFB. So I bought loads of Lizardmen. Then they went back to 40k a few weeks later, leaving me two half-armies and not enough of either to have a proper game.

Yes, I bought a psi back when they first released. Waited for 2 years after for games I'd like to play. So I sold it to a friend. The last couple years there have been many games for it I would like to play but alas I don't own one anymore.
I currently don't own any system at the moment. First time in many years. I've been thinking about picking one of the new playstations up but then I have to forgo my next batch of minis. Tough call.

Advanced Heroquest, Rogue Trader, Warhammer 3rd edition and Blood Bowl 2nd edition (I worked at GW back in the 90's and played these games to death. Left gaming for a while and got back in 2009 in part due to Mantic, but now pleased to say ebay wins have meant a resurgance in all of these excellent game systems.
Very much looking forward to diving back into what I class the golden age of the Warhammer worlds.

Mordheim. I had 5-6 gangs too. Really regret letting that one go but I wasnt playing it. Then I read those Black Library Witchhunter books and was like, on man... I miss Mordheim. Not that they even took place there, it just reminded me of the Witchhunter gang I had, and how cool it would have been to fight the possessed.

I've dumped and started MtG going on 4 times now. I don't regret dumping it when I did, but each time I restarted there are a few things I wish I had kept.
I've made the general rule now that if I do start anything, I have to start two armies worth. That way, when it goes out of fashion in my group, I can pick it up with a friend some evening and play a game without worrying if someone else has models still.
I've dumped armies for 40K, Fantasy, WM/H and as long as I keep two, I haven't regretted it. I've also managed to turn the excess into other systems to play picking up Field of Glory, malifaux, Infinity, and Flames of War.

I have faction hopped in PP's games. Started with Cygnar, traded all that for Khador. Sold what I had. Started buying Cryx and actually played the game with them. Traded them for Skorne. Then sold all of that. Saw Cyriss, dipped my toes into the faction, then sold all of that. I don't know what's up, really, but I just can't stay in a faction and play the damn game. I want to play, and acknowledge the rules are great, but I just can't do it. I've also done the same with Infinity. Pan-O, Yu Jing, Ariadna. Oh, and Netrunner! Bought the core and the packs when they came out. No one else played so I sold it all. 6 months later and other people are playing it. Guess who bought back into it?

I don't regret bailing on MTG as a game, but it certainly seems I should've held onto my cards longer. I just took in a couple of Mana Drains and some Time Warps along with a bunch of first-block Ravnica and walked out of the store with around $600 store credit. Investing in Magic cards might be a sounder retirement strategy than the stock market at this point.
However with 40k, I started eBaying stuff when I had to move about a year ago. I actually like running lean and getting rid of armies/games that I don't really play anymore. Reduces clutter. It also gives me a chance to start over from scratch.
Then again, I really like painting, so having a second shot at a model I did a long time ago and a chance to make it look awesome is a lot of fun for me.

I haven't. Some of my friends think I am something of a gaming hoarder. I have a basement dedicated to a game room, and shelves filled with minis. I have seen other guys get into, then out of, then back into a game countless times in the last 25 years of gaming.
While I have become far more discerning in what I get into now, I haven't gotten rid of anything I've already gotten to a playable level. I've traded away a couple things here and there that were partial projects that never get off the ground, I've never gotten rid of anything that was playable. It's paid off in the long run. When things come back again I have minis ready, even if that means repurposing them. There's little difference in the various warband games after all.

I sold all my 20m Vietnam stuff, and have ended up regratting it and I've rebought most of it (new versions to build, I mean.)
I sold all my 15mm Napoleonic and kinda regret that now because it was a nice little army. At the time it looked a good deal as I spent the money on 6mm stuff.
Lastly I regret selling off all my classic Citadel Judge Dredd models. The money was useful but I did it largely because I didn't know that Mongoose had published a new version of the game. There is a chance I will end up buying all the Mongoose models.
The message is, don't sell any armies. They are easy to store, they don't usually raise a huge amount of cash, and they will probably come back into play in later years.
I've also sold heaps of board wargames, and I regret a few of them because they probably won't ever be reprinted.

I regret bailing on LotR SBG when it first came out. I bought the first set then never really did anything with it. At the time I didn't realize what a nice set of rules it was. Now, I couldn't find anyone to play it if I tried, so too little too late in that regard. Magic is another game that I miss, but I was always one of those people who wanted to be competitive if I'm going to play it and that can mean some money over the long term.

Played Heroquest, Space Marine, Space Crusade, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Gorkamorka, Warhammer 40k and Rogue Trader for years, until giving up during 3rd edition due to university commitments.
Came back into wargaming about five years ago and been building up some 40k armies and my skaven, so I decided to try and dip back into my old models to expand my forces. Was quite upset to find out that my brother had given away almost all my models and games stuff to a friend back home. Since then been steadily buying up the old stuff from eBay, mostly for sentimental reasons.
Only one I don't regret losing is my old Warmachine army, as I never really found it very exciting.

Can't say that I've ever ditched something only to regret it. Of course, I'm kinda unusual in that I don't ditch models. I havn't played a GW game since 6th ed 40k came out (Frustration with rules, price, boring 'Nids dex, etc.). However, I still have all my models, and am just waiting for a better climate to play.

I don't think I've ever really regretted giving up a game (as I'm a horder of this sort of stuff)
I did have to sell off a all my Magic cards during a period of unemployment which was sad (yup I had first edition cards that are now worth loads more than I got, but I got fair value at the time and I needed the cash)
I also vaguely regret selling off my McDeath scenario box for warhammer fantasy as that was always lots of fun but I got a whole bunch of MERP RPG stuff in return that got a lot of use and that I still have

I am actually thinking about bailing on Zombicide.
I love the game, and my gaming group has a good time playing it, but I didn't participate in the 2nd Kickstarter and having to chase down those exclusive characters is unappealing. The pricing for the exclusives from the 1st Kickstarter is making me consider selling what I have and possibly starting over with just the general production sets later down the road.
I don't quite understand my desire to sell other than since I can't have all the exclusives I find myself not wanting even the few exclusives that I have since it isn't a "complete" set.
Chalk that up to a bizarro collector mindset that I just can't shake.

I don't regret much of the stuff I've sold.
I kind of regret the sheer amount I've sold, if only because that's a lot of money spent of armies/systems I never really played.
The closest I come to regretting selling anything is all my vintage, 2nd edition Space Marines after seeing this thread:

I regret not keeping more of the older models, and building an all primary color Ultramarine army.

I don't regret any game I've bailed on.
I started playing them because they were fun. I stopped because they became less than fun to play (whether it was game rules, models or certain players).
I've not sold off any of my armies. I've given stuff away though. They brought me joy at one stage and I still have memories of that - but if the models don't even get played with, they aren't worth anything to me anymore.
