Hey everyone, for any more experienced ork players out there, could you help me with deciding wether to get a looted wagon? I was thinking maybe of looting an IG Leman Russ (as i have seen many models based like that). One of the reasons I want to loot a tank is because I have chosen the Death Skulls, which apparently are looting experts and I also think looted vehicles look awsome.
I have read the stats on the Boomgun and it seems quite powerful, but i was really wondering if its worth the time, money and most importantly the points on the battlefield, as a few of my friends told me to think twice about getting one. Im currently going up against a few of my friends who collect IG (with quite a few tanks and heavy infantry), SM (with other tanks and ranged infantry), Tau (with their strong annoying ranged skills), and Necrons (with doomsday cannons and other heavy infantry).
Tell me your honest opinions about this unit and if it's actually worth it. Thanksss

Get one, but don't rely on it.
A very Orky philosophy.
I've converted mine out of a Rhino and bits from all over my old toy box.
Leman Russ would look awesome, but the AV is wasted since the Looted wagon is basically a Rhino profile.

It's a weaker, crappier Vindicator with slightly more range. Easy to kill, easily ignorable damage output, easily one of the less effective Heavy Support choices.
It can serve as a transport for Burnas or Tankbustas who can't afford a Battlewagon and have no Trukk to steal, though.

Having just one I found isn't enough. Like most Ork units you want multiples if you want it be truly effective so I normally run triple looted tanks with Big Mek Kustom Force Field support alongside lootas for a good basis for quality dakka. So if you really want to take a dive into the Looted Wagon brigade I suggest finding suitable third party tanks to orkify since there's no official model for it. It's very much a go big or go home kind of unit so if you want just one I would suggest just proxying it a few games until you're sure you want to have one.
Honestly though at this point I use most of mine as Big Trakks from Forgeworld since they're cheaper, have higher front armour, don't have "Don't Press Dat" and can have an even more damaging sawed off Basilisk Cannon instead. You can find the Big Trakk rules here:

They're ok as fairly cheap transports for units that don't have access to Trukks or you can't afford a Battlewagon for, such as burna boyz or tankbustas.

Here is my Looted Wagon built from a Leman Russ & some extras from a Battlewagon and Dakkajet. The Russ is actually a 3d print.

Currently they're wonderful modelling projects, but not great tactically - most people prefer the cheapness of a trukk/buggy or the toughness of a battlewagon.
That may all change in the new codex we're hoping for this year - surely it's to GW's advantage to encourage us to buy other races' vehicles to convert into looted wagons.

The forgeworld rules for dreadmob are available online, build your looted wagon and use the rules for the big trakk. It's everything that the looted wagon should be, for the same exact points. As much as I love the idea of "don't press dat", it simply makes the looted wagon unusable, after considering how many points you're paying for an av 11 boomgun. The trakk is av 12, str 9 ap3, with two big shootas and the equivalent of a ram in front. If you want to play a looted vehicle with a boomgun, I would highly recommend using the rules for that instead of the rules for the looted wagon
