I was driving to work the other day and Nickelback came on the radio. Now I know that a lot of people don't like them, can't understand why not, but that's just me. I did make me wonder what it is about bands / musicians that makes you either really like them hate them with a passion. I have to say I'm pretty laid back when it comes to music and have a broad range of tastes, so it would be interesting to know what kicks people off

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

My like/dislike opinions on all entertainers is based 100% on their pronunciation of the word drow.

Drow like dough is correct.

Drow like cow is dumb as hell and I hope you die in a fluke Brazilian Waxing accident.

S'funny, I think Drow like cow is correct, and secretly hope that people who pronounce it like dough wind up getting put into a coma by a horrible car accident only to wind up, through bureaucratic error, getting someone else's sex change operation while comatose in the hospital.

Far more important than how they pronounce 'Drow' is how they view driders. People who think driderdom is a curse to be avoided at all costs are correct. People who think it is a blessing to be aspired to are the scum of the earth, and should be fed strychnine laced Twinkies.

But back on topic: It's all really subjective. I tend to like what I like and dislike what I don't, and there often doesn't seem to be a thread between them. Not a big fan of most pop music, but I dig Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and a few others. Of course, I also love Alestorm, Warren Zevon, soundtracks for musicals, and a host of other, incongruous musical selections.

Eh if I can't understand the lyrics or if it's just constant screaming then I don't care for it. Also rap, I find it annoying, no offense.

If they put their own name into the lyrics, I hate them. Hate. Irrationally. The sole exception to this is Steel Panther, as they are an amazing parody of rock and can do no wrong. I would link a video, but it's impossible to get one that's SFW.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

This. Music is based solely on opinion. Some people my be terrible at actually playing their instruments, but that doesn't really make their music "bad".

Example - I love Black Flag, and they're still huge in the punk community...but I'll be the first to agree that Greg Ginn sucks at guitar, and Henry Rollins wrote some terrible lyrics (see Black Coffee). Then there's guitarists like Yngwie Malmsteen who are fething amazing at guitar, but I'm not a huge fan of his music. I love metal, but his stuff is too technical for me.

This too.

I'd like to think I can separate the Band/Singer's politics from their music too...

Case in point... my favorite band of all time is Metallica. I still love them even after that douchy napster incident.

I love Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine... but their public political activision is redonkulous.

Nickleback is okay... just overplayed.

Also... I can appreciate talent too... like Prince and Usher, even though I won't go out of my way to listen to them.

You're incorrect and you are a terrible human being for it. The world at large would be better off if you were sealed in a time capsule and allowed to make future generations realise life has never been so good.

As for the OP.
If the entertainer is a massive dick then I dislike them.
If I like their music but not them then I feel bad if i listen to their music.
Most of the time I just kinda listen to whatever sounds good. So I have a large collection of random songs and partially completed albums.

I loathe steel panther, I get the joke they're pulling but despise them simply because 99% of their fanbase are completely oblivious to it, plus it's taken rock music decades to finally start shaking off the 'skinny, drug-abusing, sexually deviant, self indulgent douchebag' stereotype and then these guys come along and lampshade it

It really depends on the genre. I like a huge range of stuff, and in each category, different things appeal to me. For example, with prog rock bands, the music itself has to be good from a technical aspect, because that's what prog is about. With Rock music it's more about the lyrics and sound, and with blues the mood tends to do it. With country, it tends to again be a combination of sound and lyrics.

Basically, sound, lyrics, music- I like different songs for different reasons.

I currently dislike all country that is played on the radio, mostly because country has become white rap: get drunk, feth the girl, get in your fancy new vehicle, repeat tomorrow.

I'll 100% agree with this. Can I have more Waylon Jennings, please? Hell, I'll even go as modern as Garth Brooks. But seriously, Country has never been a favorite of mine, it's definitely taken a turn for the worst.

We don't really get country radio on this side of the pond, but I would agree with this statement in general. Too much hip-hop/rap in country, not enough twang. I don't mind a bit of the 'softer' country stuff like Brad Paisley and some more recent Jason Aldean but I do prefer the older, southern-rock style stuff.

That said, there are still quite a few great real country bands out there. Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myres and the Randy Rogers Band all keep the more traditional style going, and there are others.

Not just opinion there are objective qualities that make some art better than others like originality, innovation, aesthetics, intellectualism, etc.

While I don't disagree, just because a band is innovative or original doesn't mean I will like them. Take the Beatles for example; they were HUGE for their time, and definitely helped music in a major way...but I don't really enjoy listening to them very much.

Oh, that's true like that's how I feel about Van Halen even though they're capable of technical work and introduced a style of heavy metal/hard rock that was stripped of its blues and psychedelic influences David Lee Roth is too silly and flamboyant for me to get into them.

Steel panther are just a flanderized version of your average 80's hair metal band, It would be funny if it wasn't such a crass caricature. If there was the slightest subtlety to the humour, it would have worked, but it's just so brazen it comes off as crude and slightly embarassing.

Slaanesh would be quite ashamed of Steel Panther if they truly are spreading it's word, as much as Slaanesh likes debauchery, it at least wants you to put on a nice aftershave and buy it dinner first...
