So, I hope all of you guys that have been playing Pandemic learned a thing or two. We need you now!

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/31/health/africa-ebola/

CNN) -- An outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in West Africa has spread to Guinea's capital and beyond its borders in an "unprecedented epidemic," a leading aid agency reported Monday.

Ebola virus spreads to Guinea capital

Man tested for Ebola after trip to Africa A total of 122 patients are suspected of contracting Ebola and 78 have died, Doctors Without Borders said. Most victims have been in Guinea, but the World Health Organization reported Sunday that two deaths in Sierra Leone and one in Liberia are suspected to have been caused by the Ebola virus.

Cases have been identified in three provinces in Guinea near the borders and in Conakry, its coastal capital, said Mariano Lugli, the Doctors Without Borders coordinator there.

"We are facing an epidemic of a magnitude never before seen in terms of the distribution of cases in the country," Lugli said in a statement issued by the organization. Previous outbreaks "were much more geographically contained and involved more remote locations," he said.

Guinea: Ebola virus spreading fast "This geographical spread is worrisome, because it will greatly complicate the tasks of the organizations working to control the epidemic," Lugli said.

The organization, also known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) describes Ebola as "one of the world's most deadly diseases." It spreads in the blood and shuts down the immune system, causing high fever, headache and muscle pain.

It is rare but creates panic, because there is no cure and it's fatal in up to 90% of cases, according to MSF. The variant seen in the Guinea outbreak is the so-called Zaire strain, which Lugli called "the most aggressive and deadly."

Holy crap, that is one scary virus. I suppose the "good news" is that it's so damn virulent it kills it's hosts before they can survive to infect too many others- but many, the idea of that getting into a major airport gives me the heebie jeebies.

It's only a real problem in areas that lack things like basic sanitation.
It's not airborn, it's not bacterial, and it's very easy to quarantine due to being spread only through bodily fluids.

So sure, in Africa where it's mostly third world conditions and sanitation is non-existent, it's really, really scary!
Over here, not so much.

I'd be much more worried over crap like malaria or even influenza honestly.

I'm also more worried, realistically, about various 'flus, but you can't deny the visceral horror of something like ebola.

Luckily it cannot be transmitted effectively through the air.

I'm a seasoned Pandemic player. Trust me, there's nothing to worry about. It's either going to kill off its infected before spreading to wide, our since its already news worthy, they will have cured it before it gets out of hand.

Carry on.

Influenza has killed more people than the bubonic plague - just not as many over as short a time. (Though what it did to the US at the start of the US involvement in WWI is pretty danged grim.)

Bubonic was epidemic - influenza is pandemic, and mutates at a much faster rate than most diseases - there are just so many different strains of the beast.

As for cholera... The Ghost Map is an excellent book on the beginnings of tracking diseases to their source.

Ebola?

Scary, but under limited circumstances, it is the symptoms that make it scary, not the number of vectors or how contagious it might be.

Ebola is one of the most contagious viral diseases known. It is spread through bodily fluids, such as the sweat, blood or saliva, of an infected person or animal. One can get it through sex as well.

It should also be noted that there are ebola strains which have been capable of being airborne before - just not the most horrible and deadly strains in humans as of yet. It doesn't mean it would become pandemic... but it certainly wouldn't be good.

Eh, it kinda sucks if this is the zombie apocalypse... despite reading so much on how to survive one I really just feel like not bothering to go and prepare. If it spreads to the UK I guess I'll go out and buy some spam or spaghetti and sausages.

Ebola is the deadliest disease known on the world... the only reason humanity hasn't gone extinct because of it is because it kills so quickly. Should be interesting to see how this turns out, If I die it will be due to my family (they go outside...) most likely.

I heard some pretty alarming stuff on NPR about the number of doctors in Liberia. They were saying that after the civil war there, the country had about 50 doctors. At the time of the current Ebola outbreak they were up to 60 or so. Sadly, a fewhave already died of Ebola bringing them closer to 50 again.

That lack of trained staff in West Africa plus the lack of medical supplies is causing huge issues.

Its causing panic and local traditions and superstitions are not helping.

Its also spread and or spreading with no end seen yet.

It could also be mutating as it jumps from host to host.

The drug ZMapp could be effective and has started to be used.

Some patients who have fought off the virus and are cured have been been ostracized by their families and friends.

I think it's also important to point out that medical cleanliness and medical practices are much, MUCH higher in the "West" than they are in Africa, so it's spread would be much slower by comparison.
