Wasn't sure if this belongs here or GD:
Is there any point to switching out the quad cannons for lasers on the Spartan?
I can't think of a single reason why the option even exists.
Am I missing something?

I had the same thought.... two shots at S9AP2 48" are just better than one shot S9AP2 36" Ordinance.

The Rapier rules are inconsistent. occasionally they are printed as AP1....Even then they are still vastly inferior to the quad-lascannons.

It's a bad choice all around though.

Yeah I'd never go for the destroyers even if they are AP1 or if you somehow get tank-hunters on top of that.

Two shots is far more useful in more cases.

A good load-out for the Spartan is usually Ceramite because feth meltaguns, A heavy flamer pintle mount, the quad lascannons, and maybe a dozerblade if you're worried about DT.

You then stuff this tank with a full squad of assault termis and a terminator armor equipped IC or two and then drive into someone's face and punch it.

Preferably have it be an Iron Hands tank so your melta-proof, AV14 all around 5HP METAL BAWKS now has IWND.

There is absolutely no situation where a single STR 9 AP 2 ordnance shot is better than two STR 9 AP 2 shots without the ordnance rule. The only reason to ever make the change is if you want to cripple your list to go easy on a newbie.

The hilarious thing is that FW have no clue why this is a problem. I pointed out that the quad lascannons are better in every possible way and asked why the laser destroyer is even an option, and the response was "because some people think laser destroyers are cool".

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

This is what I thought to be the case
Cheers guys, and especially Peregrine for the insight into Forgeworld's thinking.

Why not ally in some Dark Angels so your melta-proof, AV14 everywhere Metal Bunker with 5 hull points can have a 4++ invuln?!

413th Lucius Exterminaton Legion- 4,000pts

Atalurnos Fleetbreaker's Akhelian Corps- 2500pts

Because then you're paying hundreds of points just to make an incredibly survivable transport unnecessarily more survivable. It sounds good, but isn't cost-effective for what you gain.
