Random question, my better half is a languages teacher and has a student that wants to write about wargaming, but we can't find anything except the literal translation of Kriegsspiel. To all the native German speakers out there, what do you guys call wargaming or how do you say "I do wargaming"? Cheers in advance.

The literal translation is correct.
"Kriegsspiele" should be used to describe the activity, but this sounds to warlike to many people over here and I guess the majority of wargamers hides their 'little toy soldiers' gaming behind foreign languages or the name of the company.
So either "TT" or playing" wh40k" etc.
Another option is to call the game "a strategy game" and use "Strategie-spiele".

Kriegsspiel is the original serious wargame, invented in Germany in 1812.

Tabletopspiele would be the right word. Its funny because I dont think the word "tabletop" is as easily identified with the wargaming scene in the anglophone world as it is in the german world

Right, in German language, tabletop games are ONLY strategic miniature games like Warhammer etc. , not boardgames.
So "Tabletopspiele" it is. Never ever use the word Kriegsspiel as it is only used to label the gamers as perverts loving war.
BTW the original Kriegsspiel was not so much a game, but a training tool for Prussian officers.
