Yeah, I am 1.5 years too late to chime in to the discussion, but seriously.

Ever since I started painting with Abaddon Black the experience has not been the same as with Chaos Black.

When I was cramming through some of my old paints today and came across a paint pot that still had some Chaos Black left in it and I put some on one of my minis, BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

It's like seeing the black contrast on a $150 cheap chinese knockoff tablet (Abaddon Black), and that on a $2000 HP tablet (Chaos Black). The Chaos Black is just so... richer, and blacker than the Abaddon Black. Abaddon Black almost feels like a very dark brown to me.

Have you had the same experience? If so, which color would you recommend? Is the Vallejo equivalent good?

The Vallejo Black is very hard to beat for richness and ease of use. It's the perfect consistancy right out of the bottle. Abaddon Black ...isn't.

But isnt the problem with Vallejo paints that you dont get to dip your paint brush in them and they come in tubes where you have to squeeze the paint out instead?

That's a plus, not a problem. Doesn't let the paint dry out, and you can just use what you need.

Dropper bottles, not tubes. Paint doesn't dry out, and you can get out exactly what you need, and allows for better mixing of colors (or with water for thinning).

I used to use GW paints all the time until I got fed up with them discontinuing colors and then bringing them back in a new name and a slightly different hue. So I went to Vallejo with a side of Reaper. I haven't looked back.

P3 Thamar Black works best for me. Only issue is that it dries satin, so needs matt medium yo get right.

Vallejo model colour black works best for me. Very strong tone and nice finish when dried.

Oddly enough I don't really care about what black I use other than it having good coverage. I almost always end up washing and/or varnishing it, by which time they all look much the same.

Why do you hate Aboddon black Arun? (a lot of professional painters would prefer to use a near black instead of a pure black)

Wierd enough, I prefer using a couple thin coats of the Folk Art cheapy black to any of the higher $ hobby blacks I've tried.

Modt pure black would actually be near black, because every surface reflects llight so there would never be a complete absence of colour.

OT: Any black by vallejo would be what you are looking for.

What does pure black look like? Depending on the glossiness and texture, black can have a widely varying look to it.

There's a big difference in how VMA black looks if you airbrush it vs if you hairy brush paint it. Same colour, different texture.

Well actually the best black I have ever tried is this

http://www.winsornewton.com/products/acrylic-colours/artists-acrylic-colour-/colour-chart/mars-black/

Combined with this

http://www.winsornewton.com/products/oils-solvents-mediums-varnishes/acrylic-colour--painting-mediums-texture-gels-varnishes/acrylic-mediums/galeria-matt-medium/

it gives an amazing matte black that is hard to reproduce with either vallejo gw or army painter colors.

Plus you get like 3.5x the quantity for 1.5 the price.

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

PM me if you are interested in Commission work.
