Hello dakka, just here proposing a new rule for some 40k games, something that would add to the theme of any particular game all while discouraging spam!

The new proposed rule is "seek and destroy" an optional secondary objective. you can choose to have the rule, or if you decline this secondary rule you gain +1 to your sieze the initiative roll. Players will decide what your army will benefit from before you roll for objectives.

seek and destroy- before deployment, a player that has decided to take this rule nominates an enemy unit. this unit and all units that are duplicates of the same entry in their codex give up an extra victory point when completely destroyed (units fleeing off table does not count for seek and destroy VP "live to fight another day")

clarifications:
-units that can split (combat squads) both halves of the squad must be destroyed for the VP
-units that can take multiple squads (AM platoons) the entry for each individual squad counts as a VP. however, if the squads are combined into one (guardsman blob) the complete destruction of that squad yields the amount of seek and destroy VP's for that full combined squad.
-"duplicates of the same entry" do not have to be exactly the same, meaning that if a player taking advantage of S&D nominating a tactical squad, all squads of that codex that fall under the "tactical squad" description count as a VP when completely destroyed.

Dark angels 70/100 of deathwing, 50/100 ravenwing, 80-100 3rd company
IG +6k pts
and a sampling of different armies
warmachine, 40-50 points of:

No, just no.

This punishes good fluffy army lists like Mono-God Chaos Daemons. Imagine handing out 3 victory points because your opponent destroyed 3 of your 6 Daemonette squads.

Not to mention Sisters of Battle who only have 1 troop choice.

This still doesn't stop some spam anyway. I could take a Riptide and a XV107 R'varna and still only sacrifice 1 VP.

Also this would be abused to take out Rhinos and other Dedicated Transports, since they're the most common repeated units. Goodbye mobile troop based lists.

Maybe if you only got to select a single unit, not duplicates. Example, I target my opponents terminator squad and he picks my bloodthirster
