Subject: Review of the new DZC Monorail kit (and updated to include the Defense Laser too!)
AlexHolker wrote: It looks very Art Deco. Not what I'd expect from DZC, but it looks nice.
I think it's supposed to fit in with their buildings (cardboard and resin) which are heavily blinged with deco motifs. I prefer the more euro/japanese style for futuristic trains, but it's not a bad design.
Yeah, personally I woulda found it weird if it wasn't art deco/streamline moderne considering the rest of the human architecture and styling. Doesn't quite fit with the UCM's military hardware style, but thats whatever.

Currently, it's just scenery. It was originally supposed to ship with scenarios, but playtesting the scenarios was taking too long, so they just pushed out the kit. I expect we'll see the scenarios eventually as online downloads.
Hmm, looking great! But one thing that always struck me as odd is why, since we're in this universe with high tech looking stuff, aliens, and so on we'd still have art deco/raygun gothic architecture and trains?

It's a good point, but people ask the same question about Chicago. Why is so much of our architecture no further along than the 1950's? Big square glass boxes. Boring. In fact, even the gothic look that we associate with chicago was kind of dated and not-original when the Burnham plan was being instituted.
Not that it's an excuse for unimaginative designs, but people do tend to look backward an awful lot.

But even Chicago has modern looking buildings. It's not like they're only building stuff from the late 1800s there or something.
I don't mind looking back in time for inspiration, but it seems a bit odd that in this futuristic world the architecture hasn't changed at all. Well, then again I haven't read the background material from this setting so I have no clue how far in the future this is.
But if we're already having campaigns on other worlds, you might assume a certain style. but then again, in 40k they've got gothic cathedrals. I'm just nitpicking!
I hate Dropzone Commander. I absolutely hate it.
I am already short on money and I already collect way too many games, but DZC is so awesome I am having a lot of trouble ignoring it.
Do not force me to choose between D-Wars and DZC!
And Spartan Games is going to release Planetfall later this year... This is horrible.
Can someone donate me some money?

Maybe the people in DZC's future world have realised that "modern/futuristic" buildings look like arse? I mean seriously, would you want to live in a city filled with buildings like the Gherkin or the Shard? They're vile. Art-deco is stylish, but can also be imposing - given the choice I'd raze every single horrifying glass&steel financial/office district on earth to the ground and replace them with deco-, gothic-, or classical-inspired design.
Ahem, anyway, architectural preferences aside; any chance of pics of this set next to 28mm-scale models? The support pillars that come with this could come in very handy for a planned project if they're the height I think they are.

I've been told the Deep Wars campaign system is utter garbage, but this was just "hearsay".
Also, get DZC.

Hmm, I was more hoping for something along the lines of scifi brutalist or totalitarian (be it fascist or stalinist) architecture. Oh well, one can dream!

Oh well, that I could get behind, some of the concepts for the unbuilt Palace of the Soviets are mental(in a good way). Although I still think the gold-standard of "crazy future-commie" architectural design is the output of Yakov Chernikhov, I reference his stuff whenever I'm planning terrain.
And thanks for the pic piperider
