Picked this up lately and have been playing through it.
I never played any of the other Thief games (I know, for shame).
Its.....ok so far. GFX, atmosphere, sound and some parts of the game mechanics are very fun.
However it does a very distinct console feel to it (Im playing on PC) and certain parts just scream "aimed at teenage boys psyche!" - brothel level anyone?).
Garret as a protagonist is also brutally one dimensional, woeful to be honest, akin to the trainwreck that was the lead character in Deus Ex 3.
I'll continue plugging away at it but a friend who has played all 4 strongly recommends 3 as the seminel title of the series.

To get that out of the way: Thief 2 is the absolute pinnacle of the series. Its story and level design are superb and still hold up to modern standards.
Thief 4...ugh. I died a little inside. It barely has any connection with the older Thief games and is very action-driven and less about actual stealth. It's another example of a great series that should have been left alone instead of having been dug up again, trying to revive it but ultimatively failing in achieving that task.

There's a strong community support for Thief 1 and 2 with loads of fan missions that are of a remarkably high standard. The original games never got old for me.

I disagree entirely. It's like the difference between the first two Splinter Cell games and then Blacklist/Conviction.
You can still play the old game, with stealth and knockouts and restarting if you get detected...but it doesn't punish you if those things happen now.

Theif 4 isn't a scratch on the first 3 games garret has gone from interesting to bland and one dimensional.
That said thief 4 is still a stealth game for the most part if a poorer one that the older games. The world between missions is pointless and annoying to navigate.

It's the new game Thief They called it Thief out of the new habit of calling the newest entry of the series the same as the first game in the series. Much like tomb raider.
The reason I and others are calling it Thief 4 is to distinguish it from the first game Thief: the dark project.
