I just recently started my Dark eldar army. I was wondering if you guys could throw some inspiration my way in terms of bases, I don't wanna do something to hard, but not the standard gravel and grass.
I like the idea of using slate, but it doesn't seem Dark eldary enough.

Could always go for something like this?
Ruined temple bases from secret weapon miniatures.

They're really nice, but I'm trying to steer away from buying more stuff, just left a big hole in my pocket.
I was thinking more about something I can make with stuff at home, or things I can buy like rocks etc.

In that case, those bases are quick and easy to make your self.
Just need some milliput or any other sculpting material.
Just flatten it to the top of a base, trim off excess around it the carve in the detail.
Something like that wont take long atall to make.

Good point, I'm gonna go try to get my creativity going, see what I come up with.
The whole ruined temple thing works pretty well.
I may add some form of pillars, I guess that would be difficult to sculpt(I'm a bad sculpter)

Go into any cake shop.
They always have miniature pillars in there and i pay £10 for 20, which goes a bloody long way.
With those bases i'd sculpt the main linework and let it dry, then use a knife to cut in the breaks and cracks too as it will give a nice sharp edge to them.

Oo awesome tip, thanks for that.
The cracks etc is the part I feel I'm gonna have trouble with, its the crazy detail you have to put into them.

I just use a normal stanley blade for all of that.
Thin enough to carve the detail and quick too.

I got some bog standard sculpting clay, really cheap stuff, and spread some out nice and thin on a bit of cling film. Then when it dried I broke it up to make little chunks of masonry. Combined with a bit of gravel and flock on the other areas of the base, it can look pretty good.

I made these for my Dark Eldar, just plasticard. A bit tricky to do by hand so I cheated and used the laser cutter at work, but you could do the spikes by hand for sure, and then just paint the runes on instead of having them recessed.
