This is turning into a heartbreaking event.

300 people, many of them from a particular high school in Korea, are missing believed drowned.
This will gut a local community.
Very sad.

South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error.
They have now revised down the number rescued to 174.
Pretty big counting error.

That's pretty terrible. I've some knowledge of how ferry companies are run, and it never surprises me when there are disasters. It's difficult to tell if this disaster is due to corner cutting to save money or incompetence though.

This is the first I've heard of this accident and it sure is depressing. The high school principal hanged himeself in greif/shame? That just adds to the tragedy. I hope they are able to pull a few more (well, I'd like for a lot more, but I'm being realistic) survivors from the wreck. Air pockets can keep people alive, as long as they don't freeze to death from the cold water.

Unfortunately, you freeze to death pretty fast in water of that temperature. I wouldn't have much hope.

I watch it break on news. What really blows and a gut kicker was text being received by parents from their kids in air pockets in the ship.
