Hi guys!

I am brand new to the world of x-wing and I am absolutely loving it.

After so many years of 40k, I love this game. It is so very, very enjoyable

So my question is this, "What is the ONE piece of advice whould you like to have known when you first got started?"

I am looking forward to hearing some great tips from the Veteran pilots out there!

EDIT: A great bit of advice I received was to remember that after a ship moves, it will end up in its current firing arc - Great tip!

Don't debate grabbing that specific booster if you're "just considering" it.

BUY IT.

It won't be there next time.

I would say only buy 2 of each new model. They seem to be putting more copies into packs now like the Imperial and Rebel aces packs and the X-wing with the Medium Transport.

In 100 point games, you probably don't need more than 2 of anything to start (except maybe TIEs.)

Thanks,

There's never been any metal X-wing models.

Oh, also: Buy 2 Starters.

I would tell myself to remember earlier that I had a ton of Wizkids pocketmodel ships that were still upstairs in the parent's house.

I didn't know this game is addicting as hell.

Being a 40k player, I typically read through the 40k forums...almost like a morning newspaper. I would occasionally venture to this area out of curiosity, until I heard of Target selling starters on clearance for $12. I also heard that you need at least 2 starters. It was almost like destiny...I visited a few Targets with no luck until at last...there were 2 on the shelf as if it were destiny.

Not too long after I owned every X-Wing product lol. The cost was scant compared to what I spend on 40k...especially all that 40k that sits idly in the "to assemble" pile.

Haha, I agree. I have poured a few thousand into 40k over the years and at the moment have no inclination to pursue it much longer.

I find X-wing to be a lot more balanced game with results determined by skill (and a few lucky dice rolls) compared to that one army that destroys everything.

Buy 2 core sets. You'll get 2 sets of templates, enough dice to play anything and your best value of ships, namely X-Wings and TIEs.

Play with asteroids. I see a lot of people who don't play with them and it perplexes me. Learning how to place and play with asteroids makes you a better player, no question.

Experiment! Read up on what works for sure, but the best way to learn is to just run with it.

I only get ONE piece? Beat your friends with a baseball bat until they play it with you once, instant playgroup, they'll be hooked. After that so you can leave the bat in the closet for a while...kidding...but seriously if the tokens and piece count intimidates them: Louisville Slugger. They'll thank you for it

It's funny, three of our playgroup that hangs out at the FLGS a lot, over the past few weeks have started doing demos for other regulars and occasional walk-ins. I kid you not every demo, as in like 20, has sold a starter at least and to the more dedicated gamers one of every ship. How good does a game have to be to sell like that!?

Edit: Oh, and everything chumbalaya just said, especially: "Just run with it!"

Outside this single game, metal is unavoidable.

Then it's a good thing he's asking for advice about X-wing in particular(and even notes he's a 40K vet).

I did think it was an odd answer. Painting advice and metal advice about pre-painted, plastic minis. I thought sing your life had maybe built a custom ship or something!

It's not any cheaper once you buy multiple of he same ships, starters, game mats and everything else pre-ordered.

But at least it's the first fully painted army I've had in years .

I would tell everyone to start playing with all asteroids for every game very quickly after learning the game. I spent too long maneuvering however I wanted and took some time to get out of bad maneuvering habits when I started playing with asteroids.

And coordinate your movement so all your ships attack together on the first round of combat, don't send them in piecemeal.

Noticed your based in Sydney! We have a large player group that meet up fortnightly who used to be 40k but we have all converted to X-Wing just recently.. Let me know if your keen for a game.
