Hi all,
I've been having a lot of bad luck with the GW white primers (the black primer I never seem to have issues with), the coat never comes out smooth, its always blotchy no matter how long I shake it, tried buying a brand new can and still had the same issue. Can anyone recommend a Good primer for painting models?

White sprays seem to be more troublesome than black ones, universally (I imagine it has to do with the pigment, as it appears to be the only variable). Experimenting with your spraying technique may improve your results as much or more than experimenting with other brands. That said, I'd still recommend switching, purely based on cost.

For an equivalent product, pretty much any flat enamel spray paint will do. I use Walmart's cheap house brand (ColorPlace) extensively on plastic. RustOleum and Krylon are both popular and easy to find.

If you want to switch to an actual primer that can also be used on troublesome materials (i.e. metal, which enamels don't grip well, leading to chipping/flaking), I like Krylon's Indoor/Outdoor Primer, although I've only used the grey.

If you can handle non-aerosol options (hand brushing takes more time, not everyone has an airbrush), Vallejo's PU primer has treated me well. Again, I use the grey, but it's very light - not quite white, but even paler than the old Astronomicon Grey foundation paint. It does take a while to cure, though.

I use modelmate grey primer, its a super fine spray primer, a one coat wonder really. And, I can easily use it on light or dark models too.

I've used grey a few times and was really pleased with the results!

Though I'm usually primed in black

Couple things

The GW stuff isn't primer, primer is chemically different to paint and designed to bond with the surface it is sprayed on to. GW stuff is just paint, and is perfectly adequate, if overpriced, for most things, but it is probably worth pointing hat out.

Secondly, what are you priming? If its plastic, I can't really offer much that hasn't already been said, but if it's Finecast or proper resin, if you've not given it a wash in dish soap and a once over with a toothbrush, there's a chance there's release agent on it which could cause the issue you're experiencing.

Finally, the best primer, for speed, cost and variety of colours is Vallejo polyurethane primer. It can be brushed on, but is made for and works best with an airbrush.

Army Painter primers were good to me before I switched to airbrush.

I am a huge fan of using Rustolem for primer. I recommend washing everything first. If primer is having a hard time sticking after that like on the rubbery parts of action figurers I would do a layer of elmers first.

Army painter spray for me. Gets a good even coat and with the variety of colours, can reduce painting time too.

I use either Krylon Dual or Duplicolor (Black Hot Rod), depending on which one's in stock at my Canadian Tire. I also have a bottle of Vallejo surface primer for getting the spots I missed with aerosol and tiny fiddly bits.

I wouldn't call them the "best" but they're affordable and seem to work in more variable climates than others like the Army Painter (which is very particular about how hot and humid it likes to work in) or Armory.

Do a search on "spray primer" - as this topic comes up literally once a month, and you will find HUNDREDS of posts on it.

However, if you don't want to here are the most common replies;

1 - Don't use GW primer, ever. Its overpriced garbage.
2 - Spray with a can that is at room temp, and be mindful of humiditiy and temp.
3 - Hardware store primer works fine (I prefer rustolem 2x cover myself)
4 - Army painter, and Armory get mixed reviews, but I think both are good.
5 - The absolute most amazing primer in the solar system is vallejo surface primer, airbrushed on.

best of luck!

I love Krylon black primer, the white and gray are good also.
