I am building an AM army given the new codex. I want to build anywhere from 40-60 Veterans, with there being about 9 plasma and 6 melta. I am curious as to what models people think are the easiest to paint for veterans.

Well... cadians with lots of bits? You could do catachans if you want, but Cadians are kind of the "go to" IG.

You could always go third party.

I was thinking Cadians, but I like the look of the Catachans more. Then again, I don't like spending hours and hours assembling models if I don't have to.

So mix em. They are veterans, so you can customize how they look.

Id say it depends on if you are more comfortable painting skin or cloth, catachans mean painting more skin and cadians mean painting more cloth.

As for assembly, it would be pretty much the same, legs to base, torso to legs, arms and head to torso.

The lasguns are attached to the arms iirc, dunno if melta or plas guns are included in the boxes though.

Cadians and Catachans are pretty much interchangeable, and look pretty good combined, especially for adding character to vets. So mix and match would be my suggestion.

Personally, I would go with Victoria Miniatures or Mad Robot. Lots of options for different looks.

I used the Cadian respirator kits from FW to distinguish my veterans from the rest of the army. Also got the Cadian respirators with special weapons off of ebay for a good price. Personally I like the look of Cadians, I know many do not, however, and I'm also aware many of you don't like FW items for various reasons. You could also switch up the paintjobs on your vets to make them look more "special". I flipped the paintjob on mine. My guardsmen have khaki uniforms and helmets with green armor, and my vets have green uniforms with khaki armor.

Kitbash cadian & catachan parts, namely catachan arms because the lasguns aren't attached at all while cadians have the lasguns attached both to the firing arm & on most, to the supporting hand. Plus it gives them a more ragtag appearance vs normal cadians.
