Hi Dakka,

How would you feel if someone in your gaming group would change his Space Marine Army Chapter tactics from time to time, when s/he is playing a home-made chapter?
Personally, if it was a known chapter and it wasn't playing by the appropriate chapter tactics (say, imperial fists colour scheme and markings playing raven guard tactics) I wouldn't like it.
But since the established chapter tactics rules do not offer a whole lot of flexibility when it comes to more deviant successor chapters, I probably wouldn't hold it against him/her to change the chapter tactics from time to time. I could accommodate it as a sort-of deathwing/ravenwing difference found in the Unforgiven chapters and other examples of differing company roles and practices within individual chapters.

What's your view?

As long as I can tell which models have which CT (written on your list as well and seen before the game starts preferably) I don't care.
Models painted as Ultramarines using White Scars tactics? Fine.
Models painted as Imperial Fists using Iron Hands tactics? Fine. Etc.

Forcing players into a play style based on how they painted their models is a new idea for the game as far as I'm aware, and I'll not be awkward because someone made a Salamander biker army in 5th.

I change it up all the time as mood suits me. Let my opponent know what I am using and go to it.

As long as the tactics are stated before the game, it doesn't matter to me what tactics you use. That's kinda why there are multiple tactics in the book in my opinion. I play imperial fists. I have toyed with ultra marine and I am thinking about trying iron hands, but as long as you state it and follow it, its all good

Its a game, have fun. If you arent for some reason...find a new one.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I could care less. I actually do the same myself with my space marines and they are painted as Blood Angels. It's just a nice little rule that gives special buffs to your forces and nothing more. I really wish Games Workshop named the CT something else though. Like, Ultramarines would be "Codex Tactics" and White Scars would be "Biker Assault".

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.
1500 pts

I think it's a bit sad that you'll paint your army one way and then abandon their fluff / history/ tactics because you want to WAAC

It is not necessarily WAAC. If you show up to your gaming store expecting to play a 1500 point game, you'd already have a list written up, including what Tactics you are using. If your tactics work better against Army A than Army B, you could still end up playing against Army B.

Now if you change the Tactics once you see what your opponent is bringing, that is different.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

That is like saying that using any non-fluffy army list is WAAC, or changing your list is WAAC. Chill.

What if they changed their minds about which chapter better fit their fluff? I suppose I would treat it the same way as someone deciding between Chaos Marines and Closet Chaos Marines (Dark Angels). Basically a whole different army.

I chose Invaders because they are recklessly aggressive even for Space Marines and favor speed and shock tactics. Imperial Fist Chapter Tactics don't reflect this nearly as well as Black Templar and Raven Guard tactics would. Playing them as their officially established parent Chapter Tactics actually forces me to abandon their fluff, history, and tactics.
