I made my list knowing my group would be playing in the Zone Mortalis that day. My goal was to turn the Zone into a busy subway station and I think I accomplished that goal. I didn't know who I would be playing and it just happened that the two of us were the first ones to get there that morning so off we went. We rolled for the Mission Goal of “Force the Breach!” in which one of us is the attacker and the other is the defender trying to grab three objectives. We rolled again and he decided to attack. He placed only a single Sanguinary Guard squad with a Priest and decided that Dante and his squad would come in on reserves. I placed my Lord Commissar in the 50-man squad and deployed another 40-man squad with their
PCS on the corner of the zone leaving out my other 40-man squad and
PCS mostly because I ran out of space to put them on the board. With that we started.
Turn 1 Blood Angels:
Started his trek from his zone to mine. Nothing to shoot at so he ran. 1 minute turn.
Turn 1 Guard:
40-man squad and it’s
PCS clog up the hallways to meet them. The
LC and his squad start moving towards the other objective. No shooting, just “Move move move” orders. 100 models moved later and turn is done.
Turn 2 Blood Angels:
Dante and his squad come in and make a beeline for the objective that my
LC and his squad are going for. Other squad continues to run.
Turn 2 Guard:
My other 40-man squad comes in from reserves just opposite of Dante’s group as my other 40-man squad turns down a corridor to see his other squad as my
LC unit still is weaving through the zone heading towards an objective. After a “First rank, Second Rank” volley of around 40+ shots into Dantes group he fails only 3 armor saves and makes all 3 Feel No Pains. With only a few guardsmen seeing the other group as the main body of it is still turning the corner his other unit comes away with only one unsaved armor roll but again makes his Feel No Pain.
Turn 3 Blood Angels:
Dante pours fire into the 40-man squad and charges. Power Swords, Axes, and Chainswords make quick work of a dozen or so of Guardsmen while Dante just has to settle for a single Sergeant. The other Sanguinary squad kills too man Guardsmen in shooting and fail their charge. With Commissars backing them up neither squad is going anywhere.
Turn 3 Guard:
The
LC 50-man squad continues its journey through the Zone making its way towards Dante squad but is still a turn away from getting to join the fight. The un-engaged guardsmen pour down the corridor towards the Sanguinary Squad and unleashes a “First Rank, Second Rank” volley that drops 3 of them. Back to Dante he back hands another Sergeant, and another score of Guardsmen fall but do take one Blood Angel with them.
Turn 4 Blood Angels:
His one squad moves closer to the blob filling the hallway and downs a few more guardsmen but overwatch kills off one and fails his charge again by an inch. Dante finishes off my last Sergeant and only a Commissar and a few guardsmen are left.
Turn 4 Guard:
The front edge of my
LC squad makes it into the killing ground but will have to wait another turn to charge in thanks to run orders. My other 40-man squad once again unleashes a “First rank, Second Rank” of 50+ shots and only a Sanguinary Guard and Priest remain. Dante leaves only a few Guardsmen alive and decided to hit and run to engage the other squad that has entered the room.
Turn 5 Blood Angels:
Dante pours fire into the new squad and assaults in. Once again a ladle is needed to scope up all the dead bodies but another Blood Angels falls. The other 2-man squad once again charges in but again one dies from overwatch and now surrounded by Guardsmen he is bayoneted to the ground. Now down to about 25-men or so it begins to wheel around to cut off Dantes escape.
Turn 5 Guard:
The remnants of the decimated squad decided to charge back into the combat as the other victorious squad now makes its way to join in the growing assault but will need another turn. He decides to issue a challenge with his priest and my Lord Commissar decided to pounce on the change to take him down. He hits me twice but I make my invulnerable saves just to turn around and crush him with my powerfist.
Turn 6 Blood Angels:
Dante issues a challenge which my Lord Commissar happy pushes another Sergeant at him who puts a wound on him before being cleaved in half. The last of the original 40-man squad is finally taken care off but my
LC and guardsmen kills off the remaining of Dante’s squad leaving him all by himself.
Turn 6 Guard:
The 25-man squad sees and opening and rushes into combat as well and with about 40 onlookers the Lord Commissar accepts Dantes challenge. Dante puts a single wound on him which I use two re-rolls thanks to the mob to then make my invul save. With the remaining 4 re-rolls I hit him and wound him 3 times in which he failed his invulnerable saves and is slain.
Victory for the Imperial Guard
My Lord Commissar stands triumphant atop of his fallen soldiers.
