With the Crimson Slaughter having the same colour scheme as the World Eaters (Dark red, Gold Trim), is the only distinguishable difference on the regular Chaos Space Marines the symbol on the shoulder pad?
For Crimson Slaughter this being a white skull bordered by a spiked crown, and for World Eaters a toothed gaping mouth?

I believe the lenses on their helmets are different. For World Eaters.. I think it's green. Also, the trimming is actually brass. There is some overlap between gold and brass in terms of color so you could get away with painting the details gold.

Does this allow an army to be painted in these colours and be called World Eaters for one battle, and Crimson Slaughter for another battle? As long as the individual unit types are compatible etc.

Youd be hard pressed I think to find somebody who would give you a hard time about this. Just use brass highlighted with gold for the trim and you cant go wrong. For the emblems you could just avoid them on troops and magnetized them for your vehicles

Yeah, as long as you aren't subbing whole codexs it's all good. Telling me your Cadians are tau gets difficult. Telling me your red chaos marines are any specific chapter of chaos marines and I am fine. I will make fun of you if you tell me they are black legion, but we'll still play.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm new to all this and finding it difficult to decide on a particular army to build on. I have the Dark Vengeance set so Crimson Slaughter are my first choice. Thinking of World Eaters only because I want to use Daemons in the army and the issue whether they can side with Crimson Slaughter appears to be undecided. Grrr.

Chaos can ally with daemons therefore crimson slaughter can too. In the same way as black legion and tau enclave can all ally as per the main codex.

frankly fighting against an army that isn't grey plastic/primer only would be a bonus for a lot of people.

If there are the same models then paint scheme shouldn't really matter to anyone but the most pedantic oponnent . If someone wants to do ilyanden with purple more power to them

I think the crimson slaughter red is more (well) "crimson", meanwhile world eater have a blood like red.

It really depends on which supplement you want to use i guess!
