Played one of those games tonight that just makes you completely forget about all the gripes with 40k!
900 pts my Marines vs Tau, wiped out almost all the Tau for heavy losses and was holding enough objectives and a linebreaker to score 5pts, Tau player had first blood and two objectives for 3. Tau go last, manage to topple my linebreaker, then as the very last roll a single Firewarrior who refused to break moves 6'' and then rolls a 6 for run to get close enough to put an objective into dispute and draw the game!
Never been so happy to draw, it was genuinely a great game.
It's not all bad this 40k thing, I think we forget too often that a nice table with a good friend can pretty much make up for any problems the game mechanics may have.

When the stars align, when Gork and Mork smile on you, when the Emperor gives you his blessing and when lady luck grants you a favor and you get a great game of 40k is when you've reached the zenith of the hhhobby.
You shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops, though.

I find most of my games are great games. It also doesn't take much effort. I am happy to here someone else is having fun.
The tone of negativity on the web tends to be over exaggeration and that negative emotions tend to motivate complaining whereas happy people don't tend to post.

I love this game. I don't care how broken it is, how overpowered some lists are or how many people complain. Whenever I play I have fun, I roll dice and get to laugh in peoples faces and they to me whenever the unexpected happens. It's amazing!

When you consider that the designers are "friendly" gamers making a game that they want to play for fun with their friends, rather than a perfectly balanced, tight rule set primarily for competitive, tournament play, and play the game that way, most all of the griping goes away and you can actually enjoy it.

Nice to hear about your great game! mind if I share mine?
Last game I played was a 2,000pt game of Raptor Chapter tactics versus Nurgle deamons. The entire nurgle army had 2+ cover saves the entire game! it was a tough fight, with my tacticals holding objectives and his princes surviving everything .
Issodan the chapter master assassinated almost two plague-flyers with his special rule and some help from his scouts.
My Imperial Knight killed the most princes, one in death and one in life, and generally did the most damage. Including my own side! (damn puppet master)
One point my entire army shot at a flying prince and it would not fall down. my knight was in perfect position too! next turn it swooped down and knocked the last few hullpoints off of him.
My sternguard squad managed to slay another full wound prince with all the ammo they had, probably making their points back in the process.
It came down to literally the last turn, 15 minutes before the store closed, with me holding 4 objectives and him holding 1. Then khorne himself came down and slaughtered my two weakest squads, not even touching anything else! i managed to win only because of first blood because of Issodan's Tanya Harding special rule to weaken a squad. Im proud because the god of bloodshed himself had to step in to stop me from winning!
first victory against nurgle too!

I feel like most of my games are great, win or lose. Well, okay, the ones where I table my opponent can feel a bit bleh for me, like shredding a Space Wolf army with Daemons in a 750 point match (I was just putting together a list with the models I'd assembled that morning, not going for beatstick), or just obliterating a Necron force with combined fire from Iron Warriors, or out-shooting a Tau army into oblivion with Space Marines.
Better games include ones like the Escalation match where I tried my Lord of Skulls against Tau in 2000 points. Still a bit ugly for the Tau, I got first turn and took out the nastiest gun, and he just couldn't put enough fire into the LoS before it contacted his lines and started shredding things.
There was a nice, close game against Orks a few weeks ago... The guy brought what he called a competitive Ork list. It had Lootas and Nob Bikers in it, and a good mix. Luckily, it was short table edges for deployment, and I put most of my army out of range of the Lootas (not sure why he didn't just abandon the building and move them forward to at least snap shot). It looked scary early on, the bikes wiped out a Dev squad, the firepower was knocking out some Marines. I started landing some good hits, and concentrating fire, and just whittled down the bikes, the kans, blew up the Battlewagon, and boltered Boyz mobs until they were low enough to run when I beat them in combat (after they charged... ouch). I was certain I'd lose but in the last couple turns managed to pull out a victory.
I've had some good losses. Played a 1500 point tournament a few months ago using Dark Eldar, a Raider and Ravager based force. First couple of games were largely forgettable, with the second involving a guy allying Maugan Ra and five Rangers with his own tweaked-out Dark Eldar just so MR could man a lascannon attached to an Aegis. The last game, it was Relic, with short table edge deployment. My opponent had a Space Wolf army with Long Fang packs with missile launchers, and a Fortress of Redemption. He was able to sit back on the table edge and just blow up my army as it tried to close. Horrible, brutal loss for me... but a fun game. I've ribbed him about it ever since (and gotten some revenge).
Probably my favorite game is still back in 3rd or 4th edition, I played my Orks against another Ork player, large massive combined combat in the center of the table with easily over a hundred Orks involved. I had a Looted Basilisk and was dropping shells close to the combat and they'd scatter right into it. I blew up one of my opponent's Battlewagons right beside the combat, too, total explosion. Orks from both sides were being evaporated. It was loads of ridiculous fun.

Its great to see folks having fun with 40k. I think its important to remember that 40k is more of a fun rule set than a competitive one and moments like that really make it worthwhile

I have fun with 40k all the time. I say it, too, in some of the '40k is terrible' threads and then get called troll.
It's refreshing to see someone say "40k is fun" and not have the first poster call them a troll.

I must say all of my games are fun (I'm grateful to be near the right sort of club for my play style!), but I had a particularly nice one recently versus the club/store owner.
Necrons versus my Krieg, 750 points.
Barrage sniping his Veil of Darkness Cryptek early on (by accident no less, it was out of range but I scattered!) helped no end, because it was attached to a kitted out Lord with Tesla Immortals. They ended up footslogging but that squad was where all the fun happened. We finished the game by about three of my squads plus artillery shooting into it, and charging it. We also decided to house rule that my flamers could shoot at the Necrons even though it hit my own men- it seemed like the sort of thing a Kriegsman would do without questioning the order! Shame it killed my own guys, only for the dead Immortals to get straight back up!
Necron Overlord? Fully kitted out with 2+/3++, Warscythe and Mindshackle scarabs? Sure thing. FIX BAYONETS, MEN! Chaaarge!
He rolled three 6s for overwatched and fried my first squad completely! But, that's what sacrificial Kriegsmen do, die so that the Deathriders can sweep in skewer the enemy. On the other hand, being overrun by Initiative two Necrons is somewhat embarrassing...
Objectives saved my ass that day.

I'm also in the camp that almost all of my 40k games are a blast.
The only army I really don't have fun playing against due to boredom is the "line of tanks" build out of Imperial Guard.
There's also a particular guy in my regular gaming group (which is a competive but very friendly group) who shows up EVERY game with an optimized army list...I'm always hoping I don't draw straws to play him, because we all like to use the less-than-perfect units from our armies for gaks and giggles...its just not a tournament environment, but he comes from a tournament background, and plays every game as though a Lamborhini was on the line. He's still a young guy so hopefully in time he'll get over that phase.
I think your opponents really make the most difference to your enjoyment of the game.

Don't play him. No straws or anything. I guess if you're in a tournament, you can't help it, but otherwise, just don't deal with it. If he asks why, tell him straight up. If he can't find a game because of his behavior, he might recognize the issue and change it. I've seen that work before. Or he'll just limit who he plays. Seen that, too. Either way, you get to enjoy the game your way, and he can enjoy it his way.

I really don't have any complaints about the game at all (Aside from the fact that an RG supplemental codex is long overdue and I wish SM had units that have more than 1 wound), I love this game.
I have a buddy who is my regular opponent and I usually face off against Space Wolves, but I am also in a casual league and have had some great games against some of the folks in it.
One game springs to mind that was just such a blast to play. It was Tau vs. Raven Guard at 2k 1850 and the mission was the relic. I was trying out the inquisitor rules for the first time, also the last time...it just didn't bring that much to the table and it felt impure as I harbor a Space Wolf level of disgust for the Inqusition.
That fight over the relic resembled a meat grinder and I lost because he had first blood and nobody got the relic, But the reason why this was my absolute favorite game was because of the havoc my assault squad caused. The deployment type was Hammer and Anvil, which always favors the Tau. For the first half of the game I was outranged and outshot, but I hunkered an Assault squad behind a hill waiting for an opportune moment to strike. I had to reposition my other units in order to lure his Riptide to come closer within assault range, but once he was within charge range I got in there and did some damage and wound up tarpitting him until the Tau turn in which I killed it and was able to consolidate 6 inches. On my turn I moved the 12 to be within 6 inches of a large squad of Fire Warriors that was serving as a bullet sponge for his Ethereal and Farseer. Lost no one on the overwatch and HOW to death his HQ's and wiped the squad. They then spent the rest of the game in his backfield being a nuisance.
Great game, and this is one of the reasons why an Assault Squad or 2 will always be a staple in my army no matter how bad everyone thinks they are.
