On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey folks, have just got my hands on Peter Pig's rather excellent War of the Roses-era Bloody Barons rule set.

Rather than go the 15mm route that the rules are designed for, wondered if anyone had had any experience of expanding them into 28mm?

I did think of using 2 foot troops (40mm combined frontage) to represent the 30mm (3 units per base) frontage of the 15mm soldiers. Think that would probably work out just about right (2 ranks of billmen with a rank of archers on the back etc. a captain or general thrown in at the front). This will mean that the unit sizes will be a little larger than their 15mm equivalents, which would also effect movement/fighting distances etc.

Anyone, just wondered if anyone had already done this and what conclusions they reached! Would be very grateful for any input.

If both sides are 28's does it matter? We regularly play WFB at 15mm, can't really see it being much of a different situation.

It was more for just seeing what people were using for basing conventions, with unit size/frontage being quite important in terms of how the rules work.

I'm going to have a go anyway, but always good to steal a better idea if I can!

I'm from the future. The future of space

I've played a lot of different element based games over the years and they all pretty much come down to a ratio of base width, base depth and table size. As long as everything is close enough in these regards, it'll work fine. The other thing to consider is if you have to do anything with multiple bases and if you change the number of bases per unit, will that matter in the game?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Personally I put all my Ancient and Mediaeval armies on the "standard" WRG base sizes, which is 40mm wide for 15mm scale figures and 60mm wide for 25/28mm.

The number of figures per base varies according to the troop type, but it is from one to four figures for the width.

I can dig up more detail if you want.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

What is 'WRG'? I'm sure I would get it if I wasn't looking at it after 12am

Having read some more of the rules I think I will probably just use some of the Victrix 40x40mm bases with 2-3 minis on each - have it 3 bases wide, 2 deep.

WRG is Wargames Research Group, arguably the most important company in the development of Ancient & Mediaeval wargames.
