Heyo. I'm getting back in Fantasy to play with my friends again after I decided to quit 40k for good. I probably don't remember enough about fantasy to make a list competitive and I don't look on the internet for ideas, but I glanced through the book and just put in the stuff that I like. I've played like one game, so I guess tactics aren't as important as the list probably isn't anywhere close to finished. Anyway, please critique and help a nooby out.
Karl Franz: Ghal Maraz. -370 pts. <-- Goes with halberd block #1.
Captain of the Empire: BSB, pistol, full plate armor, shield, Razor Standard. -143 pts. <-- Goes with halberd block #1.
Warrior Priest: great weapon, heavy armor, enchanted shield. -77 pts. <-- Goes with either halberd block #1 or #2.
Level 2 battle wizard: -100 pts. <-- Not sure the best place for.
Master engineer: light armor, repeater handgun. -76 pts. <-- Goes with volley guns.
60 halberdiers: shields, sergeant, musician, standard bearer, shields. -450 pts.
Detatchment of 10 swordsmen: -70 pts.
Detachment of 10 handgunners: -70 pts.

Celestial Hurricanum: -130 pts.
Great Cannon: -120 pts.
Great Cannon: -120 pts.
Hellblaster volley gun: -120 pts.
--2436-- <-- what should I add?
Please help me. It looks good to me based on my experience with 40k, but I probably have no clue what I'm doing. Thanks.

I'm afraid I don't know a whole lot about Empire army builds, but I do remember that detachments can't have command of any kind.. So I'm pretty sure you can't have the unit champions in your detachments of swordsmen or handgunners.

Well, in my humble opinion it looks good, 2 blocks of 60 dudes will get stuff done. I would drop 2 blasters for cannons, and then drop Huss for the comet wagon, the +1 to hit will be worth its weight in platinum.

Wow, I don't know how I missed that with the Hurricanum. Yea, that's absolutely in there. Thanks!

I would change all detachments to crossbows or all handguns at least. You want the extra shots

That's actually an interesting idea. I'll have to give that a try. Automatically Appended Next Post: namiel wrote:I would change all detachments to crossbows or all handguns at least. You want the extra shots
Why the preference of crossbows over handguns? Also, is it not worth taking swordsmen to potentially counter charge with a flank? Again, I don't know enough to know what's best, just trying to understand.

It's a matter of taste - I prefer crossbowmen for a static firing line over handgunners because:
1. Extra range puts more of the opponent into threat, forcing them to come to you (works like a force multiplier with our artillery)
2. Extra range gives you more use of the +1 to hit for close range shooting, good for our lower BS.
3. If you really want to use black powder missile fire, outriders are a good alternative IMO (though some disagree to their effectiveness)
Mind you, I wouldn't be using crossbows or handguns as detachments for their move-or-fire rule. Archers are a better option for that, often run in cheap 5man chaff detachments which you can throw under the enemy bus to redirect/slow down your enemy.

Well the crossbows have 6" of extra range, makes a big difference but it is only str 3 I believe. Also what are ten swordsmen going to do besides die and be overrun by any unit you should worry about flank charging you? Anything 10 swordsmen are going to stop isn't worth bothering with.

that's better then being str3 armor piercing. the extra range is a very nice bonus The only reason I run handgunners is because I have a Nuln list and they are still effective but don't fit the fluff at all

Handguns are S4 AP range 24". Also swordsmen detachments are there to deny rank bonuses in addition to maybe causing a wound. Remember, empire wins by having more dudes, not by having the best dudes.

handgunners can do the same thing in combat by counter charging BUT the problem with that no matter swordsmen or handgunners is all 10 MUST survive to deny ranks. You have to have a FULL second rank

So? Denying ranks is important, so you will pay for the dudes to do it, I personally like archers for detachments, or if they are not an option more halberds, because S4 on state troops is fantastic.

I believe he is suggesting buffing up the numbers of your "flanker" detachments, so that even if/when some of them die in CC, you still have enough bodies to actually Disrupt your opponent's block.
Because against certain armies, all throwing a non-disrupting block into combat does is give your opponent essentially free Combat Resolution.

any detachment of only ten men are but if those ten men shoot str4 armor piercing shots then they are not invalid.....
if you are looking just for that effect you might be better off with free company
