I'm about to take the plunge with a Malifaux Guild Crew, my starting point being the new Sonia Criid starter box. I am a little stuck on basing, though. My idea was Sonia and her Witchling Stalkers have found a desert cavern in which there is a Resurrectionist workspace.

I have these:

and want to get them to look a bit like this:

I have a feeling it's going to involve my bottle of Vallejo Model Colour Stone Grey Stone Grey over a VMC Leather brown base, but wondered if anyone out there had some better ideas/colour combinations.

Cheers in advance!

For sandstone, I like a bit of warmth. I use a mix of desaturated light brown (old GW Graveyard Earth) and a touch of dark yellow (old GW Iyanden Darksun base) as a basecoat. Over this, I give a wash of brown (Devlan Mud/AP Strong Tone ink) and apply spots of a rusty red-brown (thinned Vallejo Flesh Wash - it's a very strong color, otherwise) to the still-wet brown wash, mottling the surface. Finish up with a light drybrush of the base color, lightened a touch with a cream/bone white.
