How the hell is this name pronounced? Is it derived from the Hungarian name "Istvan," meaning Stephen, which is pronounced "Ishtvan"? If it is of Hungarian origin, the double-s would also give a "sh" sound, as in "Wesselényi" or "Andrassy" for example.

If it isn't Hungarian, why does it bear such close resemblance to Hungarian?

Do you think it is a case of linguistic drift and it is a derivation of Stephen, combining another Hungarian pronounciation rule because why not, or do you think it's just a random selection of syllables put together by a science fiction writer?

I pronounce it "Steven" - it's my middle name.

Well, not quite. It's "Istvan" (one 's') but it's close enough. It means "steven".

I don't know.
I've never heard a Hungarian pronounce it.

My dad was Hungarian, but grew up during WW2 in Holland so he had an accent anyway. And when he emigrated here in the early 1960s and became a citizen, he put all of that aside for his new life. (He believed most of the conflicts with various immigrant cultures here stemmed from an inability to let the past go. New country, new start. Not new continuation of old feuds).

I think the resemblence to Hungarian is just coincidental. Sci-fi and fantasy writers just tend to glue random sounds together until they have a cool-sounding name.
Also, Hungarian is the most horrible and awesome language of Europe. Even worse than Finnish. Hungarian made me lose a linguistic competition
