So hey – I play on the regular at a London 40K/Fantasy club but we basically play whatever.
I’m thinking about trying to promote interest in BFG which I haven’t played since I was 15 (now 24).
Will the bottom work for balanced fun intro games? (I mean obs il match up the points but just from a game dynamic perspective – would love current player input).
Also – thinking about making some custom tools to help speed up some of the fiddly-ness that I remember – basically using an adapted Goniometer. Any thoughts on this angle (puntastic) would also be cool.
Imperial
2 cruisers (1 will be a carrier)
8 cobras (maybe make some vipers)
Chaos
2 cruisers (1 will be a carrier)
1 light cruiser (probs from shapeways – probs from armand – his stuff is pretty dope, though pricey)
3 escorts though (also shapeways, though whatevs – 1 of the non-torpedo ones to create contrast)

I'll certainly post some up once it gets going (our club pres is keen on pics) - im going with one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GALAXY-SPACE-PRINT-FABRIC-PER-METRE-LYCRA-SATIN-JERSEY-SPANDEX-FROM-15-99-/181182550719 (fabric space) for cost/transport reasons.
If I feel particularly lazy I may just get some galeforce9 asteroids, I bought the rulebook (which is rare for me - i mean i dont even 'spend money' on codexes) because it is just one of the nicest books GW ever produced.
For counters - print on card and laminate at work - I may shapeway the ordinance? Though im not sure that comes with bases - hey maybe I cud stick onto cardboad counters?
As an aside - does anyone know a better way of getting 30mm fly bases than original GW?
^(any general starting up advice also appreciated - any pictures of shapeways figs IRL also greatly desired, I feel not only by me )

Its not a bad variation, although i find that it is best to give an initial intro game with only one cruiser per person before moving on to fleet actions.
That said what you have chosen is balanced with one exception: Chaos fleets do not have access to light cruisers.

@Master
I am cognisant that chaos light cruisers are not in the original rulebook - though how does the 'feeling' stand on those vessels appearing here - https://docs.google.com/folderview?id=0B1Nr32u9sF3EYWQxMjcxMmItMGU1MS00NzdlLTk1YTktZWQ2MmIwYjU2ZGUz&usp=drive_web&hl=en (in the traitors alpha 1.4)
ie, the cerberus, heretic and non-believer? (I'm not sure on the source). What do you think?
As this game is unsupported I'd argue that as long as the vessels are 1) balanced correctly 2) fluffy enough 3) accepted by the majority - then it should be ok.
It feels to be 1 is fine/accepted and some conversation takes place on 2 and 3 is more than half and increasing, especially as the games takes larger departures from source.
Further - you may well be right concerning 1 on 1 engagements - though hopefully they'll get on ok.... .

30mm fly bases can be tricky but doable. See what a few local hobby shops are selling them for (GW is not the only company making them) and weigh those prices against what you can find online, ebay/other to see which is better. Its really 50-50 on online bargain w/s&h vs. generics at stores. A little jurisprudence goes a long way.

^ Thanks - you know I was filled with optimism when I first started looking for 30mm bases from online 3rd party retailers but you're right - surprisingly hard to come by (best example I saw was Australian based).
I may even have to go with GW's - 5 for 3.50 isn't too bad at the end of the day.
Also - I'm based in London - once I get myself together would anyone like to come game in Clapham? (a 40K open friendly club that has been around for about 9 months - with mostly returners to the hobby - above a pub/nice location). Could anyone recommend any other good meet ups in London/SE UK + other advice on this?

Ok - taking on board some of the comments here and also how ebay worked out (and me realising that imperial cruisers are a touch more pointsy than rebel counterparts).
Does this look Balanced n Fun? - V grateful for feedback from more experience players.
Imperial
1 Lunar
1 Dictator
8 cobra/maybe some viper
Chaos
1 Devastator

Just starting out I wouldn't woory about points too much. A Dictator, Lunar, and three Cobras against a Murder, Devistation, and three Havoc (or Infidels) should make good starting forces to learn the game.

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down. |

For flight bases, there's also Corsec Engineering.

Thank you for your input - I think I will limit slightly as suggested for ease of play.
Made some asteroids (one with fun 'moon base') on the weekend. Soon to purchase 'star cloth'.
