I always find it hard to understand why the Palestinians hate the Jews so much...

Palestine's history is essentially, "we hate jews". Hell their people's namesake means " a person who is lacking in or hostile or smugly indifferent to cultural values, intellectual pursuits, aesthetic refinement". Though reading the views of some American and Middle Eastern people on Israel does seem to amount to "they killed Jesus, so that means we should hate them" or "we thought we killed all those guys ages ago. Why're they allowed to come back? That's cheating!". Meh, try invading a country half a dozen times in the space of half century and see how they treat you...

They won the 2006 election, and have been in control of Gaza ever since. Hamas represents the will of the majority of Palestinians.

That's a ridiculous straw man...I don't love Obama, but he won the election and represents the will of the majority of the American people. You can't pretend like Hamas is some renegade organization that is merely tolerated by Palestinians.

If Palestenians = Hamas because Hamas won the election, then American = Obama-Lover because Obama won the eleciton.

Or we can agree that comparing all citizens of a country as equal to the ideology and ideals of the elected leader is a rather silly thing to do, especially when Hamas didn't even end up with a majority of the votes to begin with.

Maybe not, but we can say that Hamas is not just some fringe group and that they do have massive popular support in Palestine. At least half the people there support or sympathize with them in some fashion.

Nor could we assume that the people even voted in Hamas in the first place. Given that their classified as a terrorist organisation its hardly outside the bounds of possibility that they wouldn't be up to nasty crap on the domestic level. Yup, I mean look at the British electoral system as say that one party represents the view of an entire country. So... stick people like Hamas in power and no wonder there's programs like this on the Tv (oi and turn off that tv set or watch the BBC and expect a nice man with an AKM at your door you western loving dissident!).

But yes, they do represent underlying tensions in that country. They shout "The Israelis are oppressing you!", and the people follow.

But if those percentages are enough then we can safely say that all Americans are [insert Democratic talking point/stereotype/ideology] because they got half the votes and represent a massive popular support in the United States.

If you guys want to talk about Hamas, then talk about Hamas. But don't pretent that Hamas and Palestenian is freely interchangeable.

It's a strawman. The government is elected to represent the will of the people. I never said that ALL Palestinians feel one way or another.

They won the popular vote and won more seats in the PLC than all of the other parties combined. 67 seats were needed for a majority...they had 74. You will probably again try to misdirect the conversation instead of acknowledging you're wrong but...here's something to read. Maybe you will learn something:

Actually yes, I spent a few years in Israel. In the military. During Operation Cast Lead. When was the last time you were in Gaza?

The bottom line is this: you're insinuating that Hamas does not represent the will of the Palestinian people, which is intellectually dishonest. They won the popular vote in an election and have remained in power since. They are not some minority party. Everyone knows they don't represent the will of ALL Palestinians.

It is fairly understandable why Hamas would be popular to an oppressed people though.

Israel is really the one that's creating these martyrs.

They got 44.45% of the vote. That's not a majority.

Maybe you will learn something:

I learned that you don't know what a strawman argument is, and that you don't know the difference between a majority and a plurality.

Everyone knows they don't represent the will of ALL Palestinians.

Which is why I am saying that it is stupid to talk about "Palestinians" when talking about "Hamas".

You are the one arguing that Hamas = Palestine because hamas won an election with less than 50% of the vote while also arguing that Democrats =/= USA even though Democrats won an election with more than 50% of the votes.

Your failure to see the non-sense in your own argument doesn't mean that I'm an idiot.

But hey, if that is your only response to pointing out that Hamas =/= Palestine and that less than 50% of Palestenians voted for Hamas then it really says more about you than me.

90% of Hamas funding comes from foreign sources, half of that from Saudi Arabia (aka: our friends).

Not bickering but throwing some clarity here.

2006

Since then, despite repeated promises to cut off funds for Hamas, international aid organizations and many countries kept on sending money to Gaza, purportedly for humanitarian aid. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, raises money for Gaza through its Web site, with payments going through WorldPay (part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group ), the Arab Bank PLC in Gaza and HSBC in Amman, Jordan. Those funds come in addition to UNRWA’s annual budget of $400 million. The $7 billion to $10 billion that the Palestinian Authority has received since 1993 has come from the European Union, the U.N., the U.S., Saudi Arabia and other Arab League countries. France alone has sent more than $3 billion. This influx of cash has done little to advance the development of a viable Palestinian state or of peace in the region. Rather, it has helped to fuel the Palestinian leadership’s terrorist agenda, and kept the Palestinian people oppressed and disenfranchised.

2008

Yet the Israelis relied on Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s promise that the money would not reach Hamas or be used for any terrorist activity–even though Fayyad has little control over Palestinian Authority funds in Fatah-controlled West Bank, let alone in Hamas-controlled Gaza. Not long ago, Fayyad himself stated (and not for the first time) that controlling Palestinian finances “is virtually impossible.” Besides, promises by Fatah leaders that they will stop funds from going to Hamas are dubious at best.

Despite Fatah-Hamas disagreements, the Palestinian Authority’s Fatah-led government announced on Jan. 15, 2008, its intentions to give Hamas 40% ($3.1 billion) of the $7.4 billion pledged in December 2007 by international donors. In October 2008, despite the crackdown on Fatah members in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority was paying the salaries of 77,000 “employees.”

In December 2008, under U.S. and international pressure, Israel delivered between $64 million and $77 million in cash to Gaza. When Hamas rocket attacks intensified, Israeli banks started refusing to transfer cash to Gaza. World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and Tony Blair, who is now Mideast envoy for the E.U., Russia, the U.N. and the U.S., sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert complaining that such refusals are “counterproductive and ultimately harm Palestinian moderates.” Clearly, the world community is set on seeing the terrorist group Hamas as legitimate. But demanding that Israel pay its own executioners goes way too far.

I would not want to be th poor SoB that's tasked to track down how the money went all over the place, 45 ways to Sunday, and/or magic crystal ball I rather count sand. Hamas would have a much better standing if they focus on the issues involving the Palestinians as a whole then having the occasional free for all rocket shoot they have.

BTW this is a Forbes article and does not mention the 77K employee'sjobs. I know Hamas run the public system, waste management, social programs, and other programs to improve the Palestinian lot in life. I just dislike their "militant" side.

Lie about what? What relevance does this have? Are you suggesting that Jews, Christians etc. don't lie or don't have the capacity to lie within their own faiths. Simply ridiculous.

I really don't understand why people favour Israel so vehemently in this. When Palestinian children die they were being used as human shields by "terrorists" but when Israeli children die it's a cowardly terrorist attack. It's completely pointless to try and put these two sides on an equal footing, expecting them to fight in the same capacity. Israel is clearly the stronger military power by miles.

Nope, I am also going to post this video here, that gives interesting fact about the context of this conflict, and that is in my humble opinion about as unbiased as can be on such a touchy subject:

What do you think about it ?

If you are thinking about taqiyya, it is specifically about concealing that you are Muslim to avoid persecution. But yeah, everybody in a position of power lies a lot. It comes with the job.

Medium, you have to deal with a Muslim entity to understand a facet that goes with the public perception

I see where you are with with the Palestinians kids but Muslim countries do have influence in electing officials into UN leadership positions to express their viewpoints.

Bowing to new pressure from the powerful Arab Group in the race to replace controversial official Richard Falk, the president of the U.N. Human Rights Council has decided to ignore the vetting committee’s official choice, and instead appoint Christine Chinkin — co-author of the Goldstone Report, and a law professor at the London School of Economics – as the UN’s next special rapporteur on “Israel’s violations of the bases and principles of international law.”

When a Muslim Entity hammers into a issue one needs to look carefully into it. Like one quite a way back how Israel denies Red Cross assistant to Gaza
