My (planned) wood elf army has one of each, and enough points to take another unit, but which would be the better choice?
A unit of 3 un-upgraded hawks or 5 wild riders with a champ+shields?

Note, the rest of my army is a wizard on a bird, 3 more hawkriders, 5 wildriders, 20 Eternal guard and some waywatchers.

Bad luck?! Schmad luck!

Wild Riders, they simply kick SO MUCH ASS! 5+champ will put out 16 Str 5 Ws 5 with AP and ASF. That is amazing as it will simply mulch through most not pure combat units.

The Hawk Riders, while still deadly, are a lot less so. 3 guys will put out 6 Str 4 KB hits and 3 ASF Str 4 hits. Yeah they are faster, and killing blow will help them being dart units but over all they are a lot less scary.

Considering your army I would actually recommend the warhawks as you are somewhat light on the warmachine hunters and redirectors.

Either could be good though depending on the mages' lore. If you are not taking a defensive lore then you need more wild riders to keep enough of them to do something.

I would consider dropping glade riders for another warhawk unit and adding a second wild rider unit, somehow.

Warhawk riders are good because they are fast cav that are more mobile and actually start on the board. They are also more durable being T4.

Wild riders are great at cleaning up weaker units as well.

I'd take a pair of eagles, if you can find the space for them, don't know how much you spent on the waywatchers

The wildriders are obviously awesome, warhawk riders I think are a little pricey and fill a very similar role to wildriders and aren't that much faster. (1 inch more movement isn't it?)
And I love glade riders but at the moment ambush means that they start off the board and there's a small chance of them not turning up at all.

Or out of those 3 more wildriders as they will die like flies to shooting.

Sod it, i'll just got for 2 units of 5 wildies, with the mage on eagle and 3 warhawks harassing and redirecting.

My question now, is do I take 20 Eternal Guard w/ full command and plonk them in a venomy forest, or 15 Glade Guard with venom/trueflight arrows, Lord's Bowman and the fire attack standard?

Bad luck?! Schmad luck!
