Im building up my Dystopian wars fleets and I need to paint them to look like they have been sat in an arctic harbor for some time and have rust/frost damage.
Anyone know how I can paint on good looking rust/frost onto the ships? preferable after Ive painted them up, so weather them?

Best thing to start is go to google image and look up references. Check out "Frozen Rusty Ships". Look where rust and ice seem to form.
You will rarely find caked snow or ice on the sides because that is usually where the sun hits. The metal heats up and the snow does not stick. Notice how there always seem to be fresh snow along the bottom. That's the side snow that keeps falling or does not stick.
You will get icecles along the sides you can do that with a glue gun and make small strips or something equivalent.
Fresh rust is light, old rust tends to be darker. You will find fresh rust along the edges on top, the rust slicks near the top should be lighter. Darker along the bottom.
Don't know if you have pigments on hand for weathering but SWM have great kits

salt method is the best and easiest way of making rusted metal under paint. check it out. paint wise, i use typhus corrosion, mournfang brown, and a cheap orange art acryllic. cheap brown acryllics would work also. just drybrush/stipple it on with a trashed brush for the rust itself, no need to be neat.

I recently posted a article on the Discount Game Inc Blog that talks about weathering;

The article also links to other articles I have written on the topic as well.

For rust I use one part reaper rust brown with one part macharious solor orange. (Old gw foundation orange) I find that this makes a good rust color, check my blog or gallery for some of my rust work.

Frost is easy. Just get some GW 'Ardcote and wait for a humid day...
(Dead serious. This is how I finished my 'winter' Dark Elves.)

I recently used Modelmates Rust effect. A fantastic paint on solution that dries looking like realistic rust. Comes in 3 different shades.
