So I'm just finishing up some FW Tartaros Tactical Terminators, and the very last thing of any note I need to finish is the bolters/flamer.

They're in Ultramarine colours, but I can't decide whether to do them black, as is the modern style, or to hark back to RT/2nd Ed and do them bright red?

Personally, I'd like to do them red to add a little splash of colour (looking a touch monochrome in mainly blue and white just now) but as they're not for me, is the black more widely preferred?

Thoughts please!

Instead of bright red try a more subdued red just for the splash of color.

I toyed with that, but then it is in danger of becoming neither accurate to the current "studio scheme" nor an homage to the old school.

I would say that depends.

Are the models painted in the old school gaudy bright blue and yellow scheme or are they a closer to the current studio scheme? If they are painted like the former, than yeah, go all for a bright red gun case. If is is the latter, you can easily pull off a more subdued red as a throwback to the old school scheme and make it look cool.

Done under a strip light so unbelievably unflattering, but worth 1000 words.

I would go with the red, but I'm old school like that.

If you go old school, consider going "all in". Bright red bolters, yellow accents and trim, and green base. Not a scheme for half measures, I'd say.

A muted red works well with Ultras as an accent, especially if you've used it for Purity Seals and eye lenses as well.

Both!

Do them black with a bright red diagonal stripe on each side behind the barrels.

I vote for bright red. It does need a nice contrast colour in tehre somewhere, especially with the white helmet.
