Subject: Bolt Action: What German tanks are good?

Hello Gentleman. Since my soviet army is more or less completed and I have no further interest in 40k (For now) I decided to go back to grim dark past of 1940-1945 and fight for the Fatherland. I want to make me a German armored platoon to play with the Armored Platoon rules. What tanks are good and what should I skip? I was thinking Panzers IVs and some Stug IIIs. Perhaps a Tiger as the command tank.

I don't know the Bolt Action rules or how they have stat'ed out the tanks, but the Panther (or Panzer V) was, all around, the best tank the Germans produced in the war. Should mean its a good vehicle in the game.
Fan of the Stug's myself, but for tanking hunting, prolly the Jagdpanzer IV's. The low profile always made it a dangerous opponent.

Since the German units tend to be regulars and veterans, it's hard to fit a panther into your force and still have a good infantry core. The panzer IV is my go to. Fairly cheap as far as Germans go, medium tank armor, heavy anti tank gun.. The stug is another great choice. Automatically Appended Next Post: Veteran 1st Lt 90= 90

Agree with warsmith. The panzer IV is my usual go to. Cost effective and gets the job done.
Edit: I also find that it's turret gives it a bit of an advantage over a stug due to bolt action's vehicle pivoting rules.

How about an all tank force? Just all Panzer IVs with maybe a Hetzer?

Oh wait I haven't played the all tank supplement. Is that what you are talking about? I love big cats in German armies but my Tigers and Jagdpanthers aways seem to become easy airstrike fodder in bolt action.
All panzer IV and a hetzer sounds efficient.

That was my original question, yes, but I am glad I received general tactical advice about how to run the Krauts. Alas, if only the most effecient way to run them didn't involve taking StG44s! I wanted to run a DAK themed army and the Afrika Korps didn't get the StG44s.
However, I have sort of fallen in love with the idea of recreating a Volksgrenadier division. Lots of StG44s, access to most German tanks and can fight nearly every allied force.
I can probably still do Afrika Korps with the same tanks and new infantry since Germans painted all of their stuff Tan after 1943.
How are Pz. IIIs? If I had to guess... undergunned and under armored for their cost compared to the Hetzer/Pz IV?

None of the Panzer IIIs have heavy antitank guns so they are under gunned in comparison to Panzer IV. The Panzer III H and J dont seem to bad though since they have the reinforced rear armor.
Have you considered armored cars instead of tanks? You can get a veteran SDFKZ 234/4 for 216pts and it has a heavy antitank gun plus recce.

Wait, really? Dayum! I got to get me one of those! Do you know any vendors that sell those things in 1/48? I'm buying my German vehicles in those scale since 1/56 is way too tiny compared to the infantrymen.

Oh, dat's nice. Love the extra gubbins they give you too and not a bad deal for a 1/48 kit. Thank you, sir!
Any other German vehicle I should look into? I was considering the 250/1 Halftrack as a Flamethrower delivery vehicle.

I was actually thinking of getting it, along with most of my panzers, from this guy:
http://www.blitzkriegminiatures.com/html%20pages/1-48%20scale%20tanks/german%20tanks%20final.html
His tanks look pretty decent.
I will buy one, though. Flamers are awesome.

Now that stuff looks good. If you get one send me a pic of it in comparison with the other stuff please.

StuH 42 is solid, 2D6 howitzer is nice and it's not crazy expensive.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I like my Panther in the game but it's not cost effective, for a normal game. I field mine because it's my favorite tank, I've got an ausf A with zimmerit. The tiger and tiger 2 are just flat out crazy expensive. The hetzer is a great value though, I use one as my primary choice.
