I want something along the size of GW paints to fit in with the rest of my paint kit, but I'm not sure if GW sells the matt varnish, just the glossy 'ard coat.

Is there another model paint supplier that sells clear matt?

Vallejo makes a good one.

Golden.

These guys are actually the final word when it comes to anything paint related.

I've used their acrylic paints and their spray varnish to great effect. The paints are pricey but are worth it, the varnish is great as well, but be careful and make sure to use several thin coats as it does contain acetone as a thinning agent, so thin coats only. You have been warned! I have pondered over using their brush on varnish but this requires the use of a separate thinning agent and thus is more expensive. A simple trick though is to spray some of the varnish into a lid so you have a little puddle of it, then you can brush it on. Works great for going over decals.

Also, the Golden varnish comes in 3 flavours, matte, gloss and satin which I would recommend over the other two because the satin gives you the non glossy sheen without lightening your colours too much.

I get my Golden supplies from the local art and office shop but I'm sure you can get their stuff online.

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.

Choosing a matt varnish is a very finicky subject and you should do some testing before you start spraying on your fully painted miniatures.

I live in Florida, possibly the worst conditions possible for using matt varnish. Humidity is always >85% and usually warm. I have tried 15+ brands of varnishes (including Vallejo Matt varnish), and all but 1 gave me good results. The other had a different degree of frosting.

The one brand that gave me the best results was Liquitex Matt Varnish. I found that through an airbrush, Liquitex is the least finicky when it comes to weather conditions. I can spray it when it's humid and it gives me great results.

Testors Dullcote - I buy the small cans at Michaels with their 40% off coupons and they end up being about $3 each.

Whoops! Just read that you mean a brush on kind. Good luck with that.

I agree on the Vallejo Matt Vernish... In my opinion it's the best (pricewise too), it' resist hard-core gaming, and it's a true matt vernish, so no messy glossiness on models!

Vallejo matte, satin and gloss varnishes are great for both brush and airbrush use. If you get matte and gloss, you can mix them to get the glossiness you want. I find the vallejo matte to be ultra-matte, so for final varnishes I'll mix in some gloss.

Testors Dullcote works great. Needs very light coats if you're trying to varnish something that has weathering powders and the like but excellent overall.
