Hi Dakka

So I am about to start in my journey creating an Ork Waaagh! with every model converted and changed from their stock forms, this is obviously a fairly big tasks and since I have not done any conversions before I am running around like a headless chicken looking at scale, ratio, tips and ticks as well as sketching out what I am going to do, I have 1000 points of Space marines already set to allow me to play games (to tide me over) while I work on my Orks which will be my main fighting force.

So I have been trawling through the threads looking for a list of supplies needed for conversion and some trustworthy retailers (UK), however most the threads on this topic appear outdated (unless I am missing something), so far I have a Hand Drill and Drill Bits, Snips, Knives, Files and should have a Hack Saw somewhere. But what else do I need? And where should I order them? So I am looking for Plasticard suppliers, Tubes, Bits and I have seen some stuff about Molds, greenstuff and brownstuff how do I get into that and what do I need?

Also if you could advise me on good glue's that are not GW standard, as atm I just have their collection of Glue's, Plastic, PVA, Super Glue ect.

I suppose this question has probably been asked to death, but unfortunately I could not find any decent resources on the issue so I hope the Dakka community will be able to assist me with my project, I will of course credit any assitance when I setup my plog as it will be most appreciated by me! Also idea's and tips and warnings of course will be most appreciated as I would like to produce a good showcase.

Hope you all have a pleasant day!

Best Regards,
Da Krusha's!

I can't answer the more technical questions (as I myself don't know), but I can point you in the direction of Kromlech and Spellcrow. Too small miniature companies which produce a good amount of really neat ork bitz and pieces.

From the sounds of it you're looking for more than just head / arm / leg swaps for all of your orks, but even in that case I'd still recommend them.

For bits ebay is a decent source. And if you don't needs specific bits just look at whole bits box auctions. They are mostly a much better price than buying the bits bit by bit. And as an ork you can simply cut up whatever bits you get and integrate it in the orky armor and contraptions.

For GS I recomend to not buy from GW direct. You can get it much cheaper from others. You also might find it under the name Kneadatite (Its the original brand for the stuff.)
Milliput standard is also a cheap alternative. It is different in texture and maybe a bit harder to work with for a beginner. But the cheap price makes it ideal for bulking up / filling in larger areas.

A sculpting tool set is a good start to work with those putties .But your hobby knife can do it too. Peronally I started with the Army Painter sculpting tool set and I'm still using it today.

If you want to add custom cables and stuff you need two small smoth surfaces to roll the GS inbetween. (Maybe two plasticard rests?) This way you'll get smoth and even cables. And the Tentacle maker (or alternatively the Tube Tool Set) creates cool looking ridged cables.

Plasticard and a hole puncher will create nice large rivets for larger orky vehicle conversions. And plasticard in general can be cut into armor plates for your orks.

As long as you don't want to cast your own resin bits Instant Mould can be quite easily used to make pressmolds with (and even two part molds). It is reuseable. Simply put it in hot water, press it on the stuff you want to mould and let it cure for 10 minutes or so.

And don't use the GW plastic glue. Just use plastic cement with a needle applier. Its quite handy to avoid overspilling the glue. Either brand will probably do al long as it bonds to polystyrene.

Have you trolled on through the stickied post in this forum section? "Non-GW Miniature Suppliers" or something along those lines. If you are willing to surf through those sites you could find some nice goodies, I bet. Also, if you are starting Orks I highly, highly, highly recommend you check out Mantic Games' Warpath.
Here's a link:

They are nice minis, and the quads they offer are really cool, in my opinion. Also, they are incredibly cheap, so that's a plus. You should be able to call your FLGS and have them order you anything you want from the Mantic Games' website. Your FLGS (should) eat the shipment costs themselves, and that way you can just pick them up in the store, if that's your preference. Those models are a great starting point for any converted Ork army as they are different from the Games Workshop Orks, yet still fairly normal Orks. I would check them out!

It's all in the rolls.
