Hi Member's
I'm considering creating a Chaos Daemon army for 40k. Maybe Khorne, maybe Slaanesh or maybe mixed. BUT what I'd like to do is be able to use those models as 40K (round bases) and Fantasy (square bases). Basically, I'd like to get two armies for the price of one.

Does anyone have a clever way of doing this? You know, swapping out the bases.

Thanks
Sandy

Well it depends on how much effort you want to have. Simple magnetizing might not be enough. Especially on the more flimsy models. But maybe you could try and build inlays and glue the models to them.

Then you have to build a round and square base where the inlay slots into. This way you have a larger area to hide magents.

Or simply use round bases and magentize them onto of square ones. This way your models are a bit higher but it is probably less work.

But I haven't done this myself, so I can't say how well that would work.

As far as I know there is no actual rule that requires you to use round bases in 40k and (I think) the same applies the other way around for Fantasy.

Easiest is probably to base square (some models actually use square bases in 40k anyway), but if you play mostly 40k I think round bases will fit in Fantasy movement trays.

Basing round and magnetizing onto square also work, but is a bit more work and don't look as good IMO.

To be honest, unless you play hardcore tournaments anyone who won't play you because you have the wrong shape bases (assuming they are roughly the correct size) aren't worth playing anyway.

@Waethion,
While round bases are not a necessity in 40k, square bases are a necessity in Fantasy. Fantasy is reliant on movement trays, but also, a lot of the rules won't work with circular bases as they require you to draw a line from one of the corners of your base.

It's all in the rolls.

Maybe pin them on both bases so they are removable.

Pinning was the first thing that popped into my head as well. Would be pretty straightforwards to have a chunk of resin or putty glued underneath the base to support the pin. When you want to swap them out for different bases just pop them off the one set and stick them on the others

Just my 2 cents

Well really I think it comes down to aesthetic.

Do you want nice bases or some kind of magnetized abortion?

I would simply base them on the squares and make them look nice. There is no reason why you can't play 40k with square bases. Are there tournaments in your area that you would like to compete at? Ask around the local club and see if you're going to get penalized for either option. If it's just games with your friends then just do the square bases and don't feel bad about not fitting in! lol

I say go with square bases because Fanstasy requires the movement trays. Although you could do round bases and invest the extra work into making your own movement trays. But that's just silly.

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.

Thanks for your help guys. I was hoping there'd be an easy trick.

I'm thinking of magnetizing both bases. Then using the round base for 40K and then mounting the round base atop of the square base for Fantasy.

You could put magnets onto the models feet and use magnetic paint/primer to coat and texturize your bases. Voilá.
