http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/5/22/thailand-army-coup.html
Thailand's army chief announced a military takeover of the government Thursday, saying the coup was necessary to restore stability after six months of political deadlock and turmoil.
Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha said in a statement broadcast on national television that the same military commission that had imposed martial law Tuesday would now take control of the country's administration.
The army also announced a nationwide curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and a suspension of the country's constitution.
"In order for the country to return to normal quickly, the National Peace Keeping Committee comprised of the army, the Thai armed forces, the Royal Air Force and the police need to seize power as of May 22 at 4:30 p.m.,” Prayuth said.
The army also told anti-government protesters to leave the square where demonstrations have been taking place since November. The military is readying vehicles to take away any remaining protesters, according to Thaworn Senneam, a protest leader.
The pivotal developments came after Prayuth declared martial law on Tuesday in what he called a bid to resolve the crisis.
Since Tuesday, the Thai military has imposed several new "edicts" on the country, including one that bans media that may incite conflict or unrest, causing at least 14 partisan TV networks — both pro- and anti-government — to shut down.
Nearly 3,000 unlicensed community radio stations across Thailand have also been ordered to close. Newspapers have been warned not to publish articles that could incite unrest. The army says violators will be prosecuted. But so far, none have.
On Wednesday Prayuth summoned the country's rival political leaders for face-to-face talks. Two days of talks failed to break the impasse.
Shortly before the announcement of the takeover, armed soldiers in military vehicles surrounded the military facility where the politicians were meeting. The move was apparently meant to block those inside from leaving.
Many of the country's highest-profile figures were summoned for the meeting. They included the acting prime minister — who sent four Cabinet ministers in his place — and anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, as well as Suthep's rival from the pro-government “Red Shirts” group, Jatuporn Prompan. Reporters at the meeting said Suthep and Jatuporn were escorted out of the meeting by soldiers.
Government official Paradorn Pattanathabutr, contacted shortly after the announcement, said that the four ministers attending the meeting were still being held by the military.
"The rest of us who are outside are still fine and in the safe places. However, the situation is very worrying. We have to monitor it closely and don't know what else can happen," he said.
Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability for more than seven years.
The latest round of unrest started in November, when demonstrators took to the streets to try to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down. They accused her of being a proxy for her popular billionaire brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup and now lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a jail sentence on a corruption conviction.
The coup announced Thursday was the 12th since the country's absolute monarchy ended in 1932. The military has been widely viewed as sympathetic to the protesters seeking to oust the current government.
Paul Chambers, a professor at Chiang Mai University’s Institute for South-East Asian Affairs, told the Washington Post that Thailand has experienced nearly 30 coup attempts – some successful, some not – since 1912.
"We ask the public not to panic and to carry on their lives normally," Prayuth said. "And civil servants, stay in every ministry, carry on your responsibilities as normal."
Quite a bit of changes there

There have been 12 coups since 1932. Attempted coups don't count.

Well, as they cause a similar amount of disruption, I'd proffer that they do indeed count.

Has the King thrown in his lot with the Army yet? They want the country to "return to normal", which given that the protests were over crap like this, may not go so well. Given that one side has all the guns though, its not like the protest movement can do much now. I guess its up to the Tai people just to knuckle down for a couple of years till the army allows for elections again, then start protesting again (as come on, like hell the next government will be any better than the last one). Yeah, just another day in Tailand. =P

1. Protests continues. this time the mob doesn't belong to particular 'coloured factions'
2. Hundreads or more were detained. fates unknown, and this doesn't stop protests
3. The US government suspended all military cooperations until the election is organized
4. Myanmese model Junta is implemented
5. Universities banned protests.. either orgaized by lecturer or student union.
6. All TV Channels must broadcast The Junta's notice
Possibility
- Massacre of some sort, concentration camps
- Reform, popular vote system replaced with Bourbon Restoration-era voting system.

He's unwilling to do so. as of now it is said that the 'Royal Mandate' given to Gen. Prayudh is 'invalid' (nor any has been given to him, and he just faked out the Mandate. making himself Cao Cao in Sanguozi (or worse! certain arrogant warlord he had been fighting against... i.e. Dong Zhuo)

So the King has endorsed the coup ( Article), though he didn't do so in person because he didn't want to muddy his hands over the matter. Well, unless the military stands down, which isn't going to happen, there goes Thailand having any sort of democracy for the next couple of years. Whether this just causes more unrest, or the people knuckle under is still up in the air; I know I wouldn't be too happy if the military told me I wasn't permitted political expression.

^ Look at his facial expression. doesn't seems like Prayudh is enjoying this moment or he knew that the 'endorsement' he got is either 'incomplete', or falsified (dates shown in the endorsement are inconsistence... i'm looking for the 'questionable' endorsement). or he knew that he missed one last piece of legitimatcy.
^'Endorsemet' .. so far. this is digitalized version ... not even neat, the date shown above and below are't the same.
The 'official' version should look like this one
Public support.
There's still protests in Bangkok and elsewhere. but i'm yet to find out where it is

Correct!
1. Many 40k players in Thailand are pro-Junta only because they were brainwashed (or addicted by) by Anti-Democracy propaganda or any false, manipulated news
2. The lack of national progress, the agony of peasantry, and all ills in this nation originated from the lack of Democracy (or interruption by social elites, both the ancient (some Bluebloods) and the new (Chinese Burgeons and Technocrats). yet the tenets of 1997 Constitution (Which IMAO the BEST... and most democratic Consitiution Thailand ever has) took roots in the community level, Democratic culture is far from broken, as Local Administration councils weren't yet gone along with that constitution... for now. and ... optimistic view is that the Junta will create a new constitution that's in a middle ground of the well written 1997 version, and the ill-written 2007 ones, or preserve some tenets of the former. (and no massacre is carried out then) But no! I don't view the upcoming constitution with optimism. even then the next generation is expected to uphold the value of Democracy and Rule of Law.. and not resort to the outdated resolves again.
3. 'We stage a Coup to stop Corruption'. What a joke? Public participations are the best tool against such problem and it's possible to make changes ONLY with democracy is present. Junta with Martial Law in effect means that anyone trying to poke his/her nose on any suspicious Junta activities may be arrested, exposing them to the world may lead to the death sentence... sometimes a 5-men firing squad is sent to do that job.
Anti-Corruption bureaus (of any form) should also subjected to 'check and balance'.. if they said the councilman is contaminable (and public surveiliance is needed to check if they're indeed corrupt), the same goes to them.

At the risk of drifting OT a bit, I'd like to point out how amazing it is that we have the internet, which allows us to discuss and comment on issues like this with people who have intimate, first-hand knowledge of these events. Rather than a bunch of Americans standing around talking about the Russia/Ukraine situation with other Americans, we have actual Russians posting about what things look like from their side of the fence. Rather than a bunch of Brits standing around talking with other Brits about the coup in Thailand, we have someone from Thailand posting and saying "this is what is actually happening here and this is what it looks like to me."
Sometimes, the internet can benefit humanity.
