Hi Beautiful People,

I'm in the process of painting an imperial knight. Most of the metallic parts I sprayed with gun metal, then washed with a layer of Nuln Oil (with a little water added). After the peices dried I see white, chalky residue in all of the recesses. Looks horrible. I don't know what causes this. I chake up my paints vigorously every time I draw from the pot. The water I add to the ink is filtered. Also note that I have had this problem in the past with other pots of nuln oil, just not to this extent.

Does anyone know what causes this?

More importantly, does anyone know how to fix the issue without having to strip a whole imperial knight?

I had the same problem with another gw shade, going over it with a different shade cleared it up for me and made it look acceptable. They were only skulls though, not a whole model.

What caused it I have no idea, I assumed I hadn't shaken it enough, but given you think you had, maybe it just went off.

I have had the same happen with other GW shades of wash, mostly Argrax Earthshade.

I cured it by going over the affected area with a watery wash / glaze of paint in a similar colour.

Hope you can fix it !

Thanks guys, I'm trying to re-touch the affected areas with a fresh bottle of nuln oil. seems to be working insofar as i can see.

Yeah now that I think about it, I was touching up seraphim sepia with rhinox hide heavily thinned with lahmian medium.

Let us know how wash over wash goes

Agrax Earthshade has done it to me twice. I think it was a bad batch - it hasn't happened with my most recent container.

It only happens to me when I mix it with water.

I've resorted to using with Lahmian Medium (or equivilent) to thin. No repeat of the issue but that might not have been the cause... *shrug*

Get your models on the table and looking good!

Hey so, I was having a painkiller induced power nap thanks to my surgery, and had a god damned nightmare about this chalky gak all over my minis.

I blame all of you. Jerks.

It sounds like you may have added too much water. It has happened to me before when using heavily thinned gw washes, so I started using artists inks and blending medium/ drying retarder instead. This does give a glossy finish, however this can be fixed with a quick coat of matte varnish.

Update:

Here's a list of things that did not work:
1. using distilled water
2. not watering down the ink
3. going over top with additional ink layer
4. Prayer

What did work (sort of):
1. 50/50 medium/nuln oil mixture + humidity.

So what I think may be happening is that the ink is drying too fast. I live in a very arid climate (it's a dry heat) so that might be the environmental cause. I started putting a humidifier next to the workbench and lo', not as much white crusty crap.

And here is an example of what it looks like, in case anyone else is having the same issue. By the way, upon further inspection it appears the 50/50 mix doesn't work as well as i'd like.

yep. You gotta be careful with the GW washes nowadays.

Don't know if it was a bad batch, but ruined a lot of models a bit ago.

I switched to army painter for dark tone, soft tone, and strong tone. Replaced nuln oil, gryphonne sepia, and agrax earth shade. The other colors I still use GW and no issues though.

Yeah, that is what my seraphim sepia did, in hindsight, I "resolved" it with rhinox hide heavily thinned with lahmian medium

Still a pig though, mad me so mad

I had a friend suggest that it was perhaps the age of the chemicals in the bottle. Is anyone able to lend credence to that?
