Unless I'm missing something, under the combined arms army building approach, which I assume will be the norm for tournaments, an allied detachment must be of a different faction from your primary. Therefore, you can't have eldar ally with eldar, or nids ally with nids...or apparently even IG ally with sisters of battle since they all have the same factions, respectively... I guess only where it makes the exception in an FAQ or supplement can this be overridden? Doesn't make sense to me and just annoys me :(.

Is this just poorly written rules or what?

Care to elaborate? Because combined arms list will mean nids can't have any allied detachment that isn't come the apocalypse, which sounds lame :/.

Basically the Combined Arms detachment is allying with yourself and everyone can do it. They just have to make sure to take 1 HQ and 2 Troops. So at minimum a Combined Arms would have 4.

That said you can actually just have as many as you want as long as you fulfill that requirement. Space Wolves I think get the most as they can take 4 HQ or some crazyness.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

I guess I should have clarified and said "assuming you only get one primary detachment and an allied detachment" as I imagine most events will be.

He means, you can have multiple combined arms detachments. So, in theory you can have a CAD with your warlord, CAD Eldar, CAD Tyranids etc etc.

If your Primary Detachment (where your warlord is) is Eldar, then if you wanted to ally anyone other than Eldar, you could use the Allied Detachment FOC. This essentially "saves" you a troop, but you only get 1 slot for Elite, HS and FA.

In summary, if you want to ally with yourself, you take 2 Combined Arms Detachments and have to pay an HQ+2 troop tax.

So if an event limits you to one primary (cad) and one allied detachment, then essentially you can't end up allying with yourself as my initial post laments :(.

I guess we have to see how individual events will run things :/.

The whole rules for FOC changed so Tournaments will have to adjust.

With so many different kinds of detachments (allied, CAD, fomations, iquisition, and legion of the damned) it will probably be 2 detachments in general, not just primary and allied

I think at this point I would rather just see tournaments ban allies outright (as most did back in 2nd edition) and stick with the single detachment.

That's what I was asking about yesterday, too. If you could ally with yourself, it'd be easier to limit armies to one CAD detachment.

Looks like I'll have to stick to dataslates to get those extra slots for my nids, after all.

Only SM can ally with itself, using the Allies Detachment.

You're right, good calll! Found that in the FAQ now:

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Downloads/Product/PDF/Warhammer-40k/7th-faq/Space_Marines_v1.0_May14.pdf

Space Marine FAQ wrote:Page 77 - Allies

This should be replaced with the following: 'Space Marines can be taken in an Allied Detachment (see page 122 of Warhammer 40k: The Rules) even if your army's Primary Detachment contains units with the Space Marines Faction, provided that they have a different set of Chapter Tactics. Units in these Detachments are treated as Battle Brothers.'

Or GS infiltration (The good kind where they still use their own weapons..) Except with Necron's.

My wolves shalt have GS heads!

Formations too. So if I take a Helbrute formation as CSM, it's a battle-brother with my other CSM on the board.
