Hey Guys!,

I am new here and also new to WH40K. I am looking for a race to play (possibly with a 1500 point army list) for casual - semi-competitive play.
I don't want to try tyranids as that is my friends army I am aware this thread doesnt have much information but I dont know much at all
Hoping for some nice help/advice!

Thanks Bub

what type of combat do you prefer, (hordes? Heros? Melee? Guns?)

I guess I like having a smaller amount of meaningful units rather than a horde of small ones and guns

To help further narrow it down, would you wanna play (a) Imperial, (b) Chaos, or (c) Xenos (aliens)?

I've done some research and have found that I rather like the look of the chaos space marines, as their models look cool and apparently they are quite forgiving to play.
No idea on what units are good though

As far as chaos go the good units are:
Nurgle Lords on bike
Khorne lords on juggernaut
Plague marines
Cultists (very cheap)
Noise marines are ok
Spawn (put your lord with them)
Heldrakes
Oblits
Havocs with autocannons

These are some of the better units for chaos space marines.

The simplest choice is Space Marines. Easy to paint, easy to obtain, and fairly easy to play. Heck, if you paint them as Ultramarines, they can even have special anti-tyranid vetrans. Personally I play Nids, but used to play Orks...they may be getting a new Codex soon, so that might be a good choice as well, because the new starter set is rumored to be Orks vs Space Marines. (and a new codex often means new figures as well)

My son plays Eldar, and that army is currently as strong as heck. So that might be a choice as well.

welcome. hope ya like it here! my advice would be to read up on the different armies, and figure out which one is right for you. i've only ever played space marines and orks, and both are great fun, and totally different from each other. there are several things to consider, really. for one, there's the size and organization of your army. marines, in all forms, including space wolves, grey knights, etc., and chaos marines tend to be pretty small and versatile. orks and imperial guard are, by contrast, very large armies, though orks loosely organized, while imper- excuse me, astra militarum, are pretty tightly regimented.
then there's the way you want to play them. space marines are pretty versatile, and can be tailored to any kind of style. orks are bad at shooting (though they can compensate for this with loads of dakka!), but great for agressive assault. tau and am are not generally very good at hand-to-hand combat, but can shoot pretty well. dark eldar are fragile, but mean and fast in an assault.
then there are the modelling and painting aspects of it. some armies can be more customized than others, but it depends on how much work you want to put into it more than anything. ork vehicles are easy and fun to scratch-build or kit-bash, which is probably my favorite part of the whole mess. eldar or am vehicles, on the other hand, all tend to look the same except for the paint job. do you want your army to look pretty uniform and clean, or nasty and cobbled together?
there's also the fluff and narrative, which is a pretty wide-open field. with most any army, you can name your commanding officers, and give your army a made-up history, if you care to. some people are happy just to paint their guys up and field them, others like an elaborate tale to go along with their forces.
in the end, you gotta decide for yourself. again, do a bit of research. maybe visit your flgs and see what people there like to play. maybe there's nobody playing necrons in your area, and if they appeal to you, you can bring something new and different to the table.
but,the most important thing is that you have fun with it!

Chaos SM is an army that you can make lists that are alot of elite units, which is something you mentioned (alot if not all of their Elite units can be taken as basic troops with the right HQ). And if you change your mind and want bigger blobs, Cultists are a cheap optiom points-wise.

I'll leave it others to tell you what units are best. I don't have much experience with CSM.

Thanks for all the help I have decided to go with Chaos Space marines and have made a few selections for an army I was wondering if I could get some advice on my picks!

I want to go Nurgle.

Nurgle demon Prince
Plague marines
Heldrake
Normal chaos marines

I hope this is a good starting point for an army

Looks good to me, I don't play CSM, but all the talk I hear is that Nurgle has some good stuff. Heldrake just got Nurfed, but you don't have many choices. Heck I'd see that as good news. Now I can find a cheap one on E-bay. If you decide to expand into swarms, Zombie is one of the most highly regarded versions.

Currently Psychic effects are all the rage, so you might want to paint up a Sorcerer.

Smash got nurfed, so they got better (more survivable anyway )

Maulerfiends got much better as they are now harder to Explode!, have an invulnerable save, can repair, reduce the number of attacks coming in with Lash Whips, are S10, and because monstrous creatures got a nerf via Smash being 1 attack.

As for Chaos, basically what people have mentioned (and you) are great starting places.

nurgle, hmm? plague marines are pretty tough. i got tabled by a guy playing a nurgle army once, against my orks. his tactics were naaasty! he used lash to round up mobs of boyz and deposit them in front of his obliterator squads, then blasted 'em with heavy flamers... i went home, curled into a ball, and cried. like a baby. then i went back the next weekend and sent da ladz in fer anuvver go!

If you want to field few units but have them be good units nurgle is a great choice. personally I don't think the daemon prince is a great first HQ choice especially with the new 7th edition rules (monstrous creatures got nerfed a bit). I'd say as a second HQ he'd be a good choice.

With the new psychic rules I highly recommend a sorcerer and the Nurgle psychic powers are really pretty nice. If that's not your style then the Nurgle lord on a bike is a fan favourite. Either one you pick you'll get to take the plague marines as a troops choice and that's a good solid hard to kill troop. Great for taking objectives and making sure you stay on them (not to mention they come well equipped and can be given good gear to compliment them).

Heldrakes aren't as good as they used to be but are still solid units. The maulerfiend is a lot better than he used to be and the Forgefiend (my personal favourite) is as good as he's ever been (arguably better in the new 7th rules).

To start off with I'd suggest getting the HQ of your preference, two squads of plague marines and a couple rhinos to put them in then fill out with units of preference (I like predators with 3 lascannons).

Just my two cents, hope it helps!

I recommend a nurgle lord on bike with LC/PF, a nurgle sorcerer on bike with familiar, all running with a good ol unit of bikes or spawn with MoN. Also depending on how much cash or love you have, mauler and forge fiends are good editions. MoN oblits are good to, heldrakes arn't bad and with this new nerf to them will see less people cry about you taking any. And of course PM with duel plasmas/flamers are fantastic.
