So as we all know, some Dark Angels wear robes. Is there any order to who gets to wear robes or is it random? Is there any resource on this?

So that's why Ahriman wears robes, too?

Veterans get them, and Deathwing wearing PA get them, too.

. Not big on the dark angels fluff but does that mean only tactical marines get to flaunt being in the inner circle, because tactical marines and characters only seem to be wearing them.

Nope. We see COMPANY veterans wearing them, sergeants, too, and those aren't Inner Circle.

In UM you get a fancy helmet, SW give you some form of wolf-like attire, the Dark Angels one-up the rest and give you a robe.

Considering they were based on a notoriously homosexual poet, and they were originally invented by a bunch of northerners in the 70s (or was it 80s?) I would not be at all surprised if it was a slightly tasteless joke regarding crossdressing.

Bad luck?! Schmad luck!

No, they're given to veterans.

There aren't any veteran assault marines? No veteran devastators?

Not that you can include in your army :l

There's art of DA assault marines with at least something robe-ish, and devastators too. Besides, robes aren't very practical, definitely not when you've got this massive engine on your back in which they can get sucked :{

I don't see how monastic robes have anything to do with homosexuality or cross-dressing. It's simply because they more than any other SM chapter emphasise the whole warrior monk thing. Also I'm pretty sure the robes came much later than the original game.

I don't think there's anything that specifically states who wears robes in the fluff. It just kind of is how it is. In the codex though, veterans wear robes. Typically you'd see a Sargent wearing them. I also recall something about how angels do not wear flashy trinkets but are modest in appearance.

TL;DR
Veterans wear robes

Really?

People are making comments to the effect of genuinely thinking they wear robes due to jokes about their sexuality? See, this is something that is frustrating about Dakka - only occasionally do you see sense being employed.

The Dark Angels are space knights. Real knights used to wear tabards to denote their chapter / lord.

^This. I don't understand why for some people the first thing they think of when they see Dark Angel robes is that they're homosexual, because robes are apparently like dresses, and not at all derived from knightly tabards/ monastic robes.

Certain people on the internet view homosexuality as a negative thing and feel the need to call names on things for no reason at all. Thus, "Dork Angelz are gay lolz".

As I said, they came about from a time (the 70s) when being gay was not seen as a good thing in the UK. And as I've said, Lionel Johnson (who's a really good poet btw, some of his stuff's kinda naff but some of it is pretty wrenching stuff) wrote a rather large epic poem called 'The Dark Angel' about coming to terms with his homosexuality.
And the fact that middle-aged northerners are not widely held to be the most PC-centric people on the earth.

As true as that may be, I'm fairly sure most people calling 'em gay and saying that they're cross-dressing don't know that.

Perhaps they're like middle-aged northerners in that aspect?

then again, the space knight aspect (which is probably the best interpretation of them imo) was only really fleshed out in this edition, remember before when they had that odd native american thing going on?

tbh I think DA are a mishmash of whoever's in charge of their artistic direction at the time. People would probably be more comfortable buying and playing european knightly order type things than a slightly tasteless native american knock-off, as sad as that might be.
