I cannot stress how awesome the Agrellan Earth paint is that Games Workshop makes. After black and white basecoat paints, Agrellan Earth is arguably the most essential paint everyone should have in their stash.
Basically this paint alone allows you to forego any and all basing material and just use this paint to base your armies. Watch this turorial to get an idea of what I'm talking about:
I was skeptical of GW's tutorial and thought it was just some glorious advertising and that I would never be able to recreate the effect to that degree at home BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. I applied it to the base of my Forgeworld Avatar (pics to follow later) and it worked like a charm. It just needs around 2 hours to fully dry.
If you havent gotten this paint yet, GET IT!!!!
Just make sure to store it safely so it never dries out, but seriously this paint produces an awesome basing effect worthy of any desert army.

I use it for all my 40K minis for basing and it works pretty well for a quick and easy look.

Anyways, not a fan of the other texture paints because they are so situational. I'm a fan of clean looking models rather than weathering etc. just personal taste.
Also I'm the kind of guy who usually buys as few paints as possible to keep costs down and usually gets more shades through mixing.
But Agrellan Earth is one of those paints where I really have to say that you just cant go wrong with it.

I have to say GW did do alright with the new paints

It really is a must have if you enjoy basing, it also looks nice as cracked ice when drybrushed when dry with blues to make it look like shallow ice that has cracked through.
Quick question,I've been looking at crackle paints and for most of them you have to paint them over a pva base layer so they can contract and crackle, is there anything special like that with the GW one?

I'll be honest with you, i just slap it on the base and leave it to dry and it looks just fine. It's a no effort for a nice effect paint.

For that price I could get enough basing material to last me a whole lot longer than the pot of paint will.
Just look around at what you have on your yard/ house. I bought one tub of gravel over 10 years ago and it's still nearly full because I hardly ever use it.
$4.25 isn't much to burn, even if it doesn't work well for me. Looks a little finicky but probably worth trying. I'm interested if it would apply well to other media (ceramics/glass? Probably not.)
Good job, you've convinced me. This will be the first GW thing I've bought in the last 5 months besides an issue of WD.

Agrellan Earth is hideously overpriced crackle medium. If minor convenience is worth paying 5-10x as much, go for the Agrellan Earth. If you're basing an army with it, you'll save a lot of money by using crackle medium and the final look won't be worse.

I came here to say just that.
I have a 250ml bottle in front of me (that's 8.4 fl oz you you Americans) and it cost me all of $15.00 and allows me to use whatever colour I want.

I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I do say that - frequently ; p The contrast is more extreme here however as rather than a 12ml pot of paint for $4.50 compared to a 17ml bottle for $3 (Vallejo) or 60ml bottle for $3 (Minitaire), it's a 12ml pot for $4.50 compared to a 250ml pot for $15. Agrellan Earth costs 7x the generic alternative that functions just as well rather than 2x the paint per dollar for vallejo. Rough numbers off the top of my head, may vary on region.

Every hobbyist should go out of there way to visit art stores and talk with the staff there in depth about their current and possible future projects at least once. It is AMAZING what you can learn and find there.
I, like a great many people I know, hadn't heard of crackle medium until GW put out their one. I commented on it to a friend, he dragged me around the corner to the art store and put the 250ml bottle in my hand.
Since then I have found some amazing things from there, including metallic paints in every colour of the rainbow, basing supplies, pigments (weathering powders), much larger tubs of texture past for only a little more than GW charges and, most recently, trees for basing supplies as well as paint thinners and an irradecant medium (adds a metallic sparkle to regular colours).
I am sure GW's stuff is good. But it is far from AWESOME!!!

They are.
Add in their habit of revising their range every few years and dropping or changing colours. and it quickly becomes apparent that there are better options out there.
