I give them as wash to darken them + dirty up a bit, marines should not look parade clean too me
I have a quick shade dark wash that's invaluable.

Bleach bone base, sepia wash, highlight with white... paint very small thin black swiggles and wash with a light brown glaze. This is my method and I think it works well.

That's the way I do it and it's work well. You can also use a very fine ball point pen to do the writing or swiggles
