Okay I want to sexy up a new space marines army. I have so much chaos that is pretty and converted that it makes me see how much I have neglected my loyalists. Even my dark angels which are my astral claws, not so loyal because of it.... and my guard which is more FW renegade than gw loyalist....
Then we reach the loyalists. A rogue trader space marine blob of awesome but not sexy.
What I have planned is this so far
Flamers using Pyroclast models
lizardmen shields for storm shields
need more ideas for
making the drop pods look good
maybe custom thunder hammers
Units I am going to use
2 command squads in drop pods 5 flamers each
1 vulkan
3 apothecaries (still debating if I should paint them white) 1 is the badab character the other two will be swap outs in the command squads
some attack bikes and land speeders
tac squads in drop pods
5 man th/ss termies
ashmantle
maybe a land raider Achilles
Stormraven
the plan is to run a badab list when I can. Most people will be okay with that because they hate vulkan.
Hit me with every idea from base to after market everything. The painting guide you use personally. For those of you whe read the deeply extended fluff I am taking ideas on chapter markings.
I want to avoid lava bases. It is over done with salamanders and khorne daemons.

Dark elf cloaks work well and you can make a very nice Vulkan hestan from some grey knight models.
Hope that helps

I second Dark Elves Raider cloaks. With a bit of carving they fit on the back of marine torsos. Especially a nice touch for HQ or special models. And chapterhouse has a few nice dragon themed custom marine parts. (Including heads, shields, tank conversion kits, usw...) And you can use GS to sculpt scalelike surfaces. You could add areas of those to the drop pods - or tanks in general.

Simple scales aren't that hard to do. Just a thin smooth layer of GS. And then add small irregular shapes with your tool or knife. I don't have a good picture at hand. But you can see it a little bit on the shoulder pads on the two models from the right. (Oh and you can see the dark elf cloaks used as well. )

There are tons of 'Salamander' add-ons available. In addition to the various Forgeworld stuff, Kromlech and Spellcrow have some great looking stuff (though the frills on some of the Kromlech shoulder pads can limit the models they go on and positions of arms).
For the Apothecaries, remember that Salamanders medics traditionally paint the left side of their helmet and left arm red - a bit of Salamanders fluff from an early SM painting guide. If you can track down a copy of that painting guide, there are some other uniquenesses you can add in - alternate rank markings, for example.
You may also want to throw in the odd Saturnyne Ram logo - a tribute to the chapters pre-Vulkan XVIII Legion origins.
Also, with the master crafting and personalization of their weapons, think about adding weapons from other companies for a unique, personalized look for each marine in your army. Keep color schemes the same so weapons are recognizable no matter what manufacturer they came from - blue glow on plasma guns, green on grav guns, etc.

Get yourself some of the Dragon Knight bits from Spellcrow. Maxmini have a scale cloak pack of conversion bits.
