Not sure if this is the right place for this. If not I apologize. On Space Marine Scouts with a Land Speeder Storm with flamer are shotguns or bolters a better choice? I want to use this unit as an objective hunter and unit harrassment.

I think that you should take bolters. I never use shotguns because bolters are just better. They have more range(24 inches), they have ap and, they're scouts...why would they want to assault anyway? I would personally go with bolters.

Why question if the glass of water is half full or half empty? The glass is refillable.

Depends on if you plan on disembarking the unit to assault or not. If you want to imply harass and keep them in the Storm until you're ready to nab an objective I think Bolters are your best bet for two reasons. The first being longer range while also getting two shots at the same range of the shotgun, and the second being that they have an AP value.

The only advantage of shotguns is if you're planning on charging into close combat. Bolters will put out equivalent fire inside 12" and more out to 24".

Where would one find shotguns to purchase?

Well, you could probably get the Scout arms with shotguns on eBay, or you could look into 3rd party weapons that look shotgunny (Anvil Industries has a double barrel, as well as some rifles that are chunky enough you could easily pass them off as shotguns).

Edit: poking around the site turned up these combat shotguns as well.

Pure shooting on a mobile unit, bolters are better

Planning on charging? BP/CCW

Want something somewhere in the middle, not as good at either but capable of both? Shotguns.

I wouldn't say "eat them for breakfast" but they can wreak a bit of havoc. Bolters make them a solid midfield objective holder. I take shotguns because the rule of cool applies, but I admit they're not quite as handy as bolters much of the time.

Rule of cool is all you need. The Fonz taught me that.

They really don't. WS3 and 4+ armor is a major crutch. They can't reliably kill other army's basic infantry (cultists will give them a hard fight).

That's what the Cerberus launcher is for.

Considering their range damage is not theat great no matter what they're equipped with, i'd go bp+ccw. This extra attack makes the difference.

And actually, 5 scouts will murder 10 cultists without much chances. 4 bolter shots and a frag grenade will kill 1-2 cultists. Let's say u're unlucky and loose one on overwatch. You strike first and kill around 3 with regular scouts and your sergeant will most likely win a challenge. Let's say you cause 4 wounds total - somewhere a bit lower than average. Than 4-5 remaining cultists strike and kill one. You've won the combat 4 to 1.

Scouts are quite potent in mellee vs adequate targets. Oh, and don't forget, they have krak nades to boot, so they're basically like tacticals vs vehicles in mellee.

Since my 'assault scouts' are limited to 5 men hopping out of a LSS transport, I load them out with shotguns. The added pre-assault attacks without fear of immediate retribution helps a touch before they assault against sub-optimal targets (MEQ, etc).
In general, I don't find they have the durability to rely on 2+ rounds of combat where the BP/CCW setup pays out with more attacks over time; I need mine to break the opponent in one round or I assume they're not likely to survive for long. If they can't solve the problem with shooting then shotguns give them the option to get a charge in and try to mop up the target or chance another leadership test to trot them off the board.

Granted, I try and maintain versatility throughout most of my units, playing a bit softer than most anymore.
