My girlfriend recently came over, and i had accidentally left out my painting stuff after a long day of getting a tactical squad finished. She looked at it, said "Oh, so this is what you paint?"
I thought i was screwed.
"That's a lil' geeky, but whatever! Can I paint one?"

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. Especially if you're a good painter
She, on the other hand, paints like an epileptic monkey on crack. Seriously, who paints chainswords pink?

budro wrote:Dude, it's little plastic dolls that we play with.
"Dude," they are NOT dolls. "Dolls" have movable joints. Articulation. "Dolls" generally come with changable wardrobes and goofy gimmicks like peeing their diapers. Think, "Barbie." Little girls played with "dolls." when we were little boys, we played with "action figures," but they were really "dolls."
We play 40k (and other minis games) with toy (or model) soldiers and model tanks. Tamyia does not sell 1/35 scale PzKpfw V "doll" kits. Revell does not sell 1/72 British 8th Army "dolls." They are model kits. Plastic soldiers, etc. Not "dolls."
Always bugs the sh*t out of me when people call miniatures "dolls."
To the OP, I think you're being slowed about this. First of all, you act all ashamed about playing 40k, like playing around other people (that aren't your close friends) is beneath you. That 30 year old men shouting "Waaaghhh" are pariahs to be mocked and pitied and kept in the closet. You irrationally think that being spotted playing 40k would label you as "uncool" or a "geek?" Why don't you worry that being so over-sensitive about this issue might make you look like a sissy-man?
I'm just sayin...
What makes you more of a geek, more pathetic? The fact that you were seen playing 40k at a game store, or that you came online to ask a bunch of anonymous people that, by your definition are geeks, for advice about women?
I'm just sayin...
For the record, when I started buying and painting miniatures, I was a "cool dude" too. I played guitar and sang in a punk/ska bar band as my only source of legal income for several years. We played multiple shows every week and traveled for shows in many different states. I am pierced (6g septum ring) and had multiple eyebrow piercings and, yes, a Prince Albert (look it up on Wikipedia). This was in the early-mid 90's when telling a girl you were in a band magically made their pants drop. I partied my ass off, skated, got laid a bunch and always had a ton of painted WHFB on a shelf in a room off of the kitchen in my apartment. I had three Armorcast Eldar titans sitting on my 18" Peavy P.A. speakers that I used for my stereo system and on my Peavy half-stack (when it wasn't at the practice room or a bar).
Never once did I get anyone, women included, that said, "You geek." In fact, I always got the astonished, "You painted these all by yourself?" In my experience, chicks dig art. Whether it's a painting, photogrgaph, written, musical, or yes, even nicely painted miniatures.

Wait .. being a geek is a BAD thing?!? Eek.
I've been with my wife for 20 years. We RP together, we've LARPed together. Our interests share a fair degree of overlap. She's not 40K'd yet, but has recently expressed an interest in painting some of my mini's.
I find that, as long as we both respect each other's personal space and 'me time' (and I keep my stuff stowed neatly away), there's room for all shapes and sizes of (perceived) weirdness in our relationship.

Ahhh i remember it sooo well, its was grade five and i was ten, mum said "what would you like for your birthday today Andrew?" and I replied, "i saw some things in the toy shop today called warhammers 4000000" to which mum replied " ok i'll get you it".
the next day i took my newly painted minis to school and every was amazed by how cool they were, and in about three weeks five had our own armies and we were playing games every lunch time.
three years past and every thing was grand, untill i started high school(Dun Dun Duuuuuunnnnnnn). i knew no one so i did what i did at my last school and started bringing figs to school and showing them off. and for a while people were like meh there alright, but after a while it turned into insults, so to save face i said i gave it up but kept buying white dwarf every month and occasionaly going to gw stores to purchase the occasional fig and paint. then after a while i heard of groups of kids from school whod go into the GW store and cause carnage(such as knock over figs during games, breaking stuff ect ect) and so i stopped going there too. in the end when i finished school (and found Dakka) i was inspired to restart the hobby even though i still get raised eye brows from most people.
the moral of this story is don't give a crap what people think, they're dicks,
LL

When I was in Jr. High, one of my buddies got me into 40k by giving me a couple of his old eldar models to paint. I was so proud of the paint jobs that a couple of days later a brought them to school with me to show a friend. I had them wrapped up in a paper towel and in zip lock bag. A teacher saw me showing them to a friend behind one of the buildings and she thought I was dealing drugs. Cleared it up rather quickly (more to her relief than mine funny enough) but it was an amusing situation. So just remember, the first one’s free.

being a geek really isnt a big deal any more. or maybe now that i'm older i just dont care but it seems that geeks are cute now and really as to the OP she probably already nows that you have at least some geeklike tendencies.
Are you just afraid that 40k can put you into the "dark nerd" catagory?

You know that the powdery stuff from the molds is really crack, right? That's why we keep buying models that we don't need. At least that's my excuse.

Words to live by, my friend, words to live by.
But seriously, going into stores and breaking stuff and knocking over minis?! Little punks are lucky they never tried something like that in any of the stores my friends frequent, cause they'd have left that store with a goodly amount of stab wounds. My friends are... violent. And fiercely protective of their work.
I know from experience...

I once had to explain to my gf that not only do I play with small plastic men but also compete in robot wars and ocasionaly get into a geeky online game with elfs. Dont forget being a fan of anime.
My fragile image could of been shattered but luckly she had a little brother who was a geek himself so she looked passed it.

My girlfriend's reaction was priceless when I told her I painted miniatures. We were laying in bed and I just came out and said "I paint models" she asked what kind and I explained to the best of my ability. The next day I get off of work and she had bought me a plane kit to build and fly. Later that day I showed her some figs and she responded by saying "This nerd thing is cute." "Can I paint?" "I need to find a hobby" and "am I nerdy enough for you?"
Wouldn't trade her for the world.

Mold lines are the diabolic offspring of the 3 beasts of hell.
1) Satan himself
2) Rogue Nose goblins that chew away at the seams in the molds and attempt to push them out of align
and
3) Dumb F***s who can't create a decent mold.
Hope that clears it up for you.
