*sigh* no you completly missed the point of what I said.
there's this thing called emotion and thought. you have to realize that just like everywhere else there are people that play this game that aren't all there.
when I started 40k I played because people where impressed that I could paint as well as I could for my age. this is still true now and I can paint a lot better then most people at my FLS. I played because this was the only way I was able to get praise because of my artistic talent.
'Self-Confidence is built on hours, days, weeks, months, and years of small personal victories.'
I was able to escape my depression because I was taught how to paint and practiced very hard. Now if someone starts this game seeing the admeration that the people that have played for years and years and want to be like that. they go home and work on their models, build a list, come back and hope to learn how to become a good player. They show up on the league night and having so much faith and hope invested into their list and army. They read the fluff on their unbeatable marines and are hoping to be able to fight off whatever comes at them, just like in their codex.
now steps in the guy that just got off work, has had a s**t tastic day and simply destroys the newbie. After its over he say's 'good game' packs up his mini's and goes to chat with the group of gamers that are always there. this kid started hoping to learn and be accepted but has no way of knowing how to become a part of the group and no one has any reason to reach out to him.
same thing happens in paintball sometimes. they invest a ton of money into their marker (paintball gun's legal name) and gear, go out and because they don't know anything about combat they get lit up every game. their there by themselves and they go home throw their marker on the desk and start looking for someone to sell it to.
war games arn't serious, people playing them are.

Well put.
I have seen the scenario you are describing, and sadly I'm sure it happens everywhere. That is why I tried at the beginning of this thread to make it clear that there were certain things that weren't included in the topic.
Certain things that a normal level-headed human being would consider "bad form."
You can usually tell about the person you are playing if they are in the right frame of mind or not.(usually) And I didn't start this thing so that we could make fun of those that DID have other things on their mind and the loss of a game was the final straw.
I just wanted some good stories, and I think for the most part thats what I got.
Incidentally Wash, I'm glad that painting gave you an outlet for escaping what was troubling you.
soooo...how bout them Red Sox?

I agree with the bolded part, but for the opposite reason. That being that the person who takes personal offense and lets a loss, a jerk slapping them into quitting the game, or in general lets someone else dictate their feelings are the ones taking it seriously.
When I started paintball I played speedball with an Ion that had lots of ups. $500 retail or something like that. I got killed a lot. I didn't take it seriously and sell my stuff. When I started playing warhammer, I played guys who attempt to win at all costs, are pretty lame, and alpha-male their way through the game. I didn't take it seriously and sell my stuff. It's called mental toughness. I became a lot happier years ago when I decided not to take things seriously. I think some people call it "living the laughtrack" when you make everything out to be a joke. Learn to laugh at yourself and others. I pour a lot of time and energy into my figures and I'm proud of them. But hey, when my NMM-and-20-highlights commander was dropped by some dude and his arms fell off? Haha, it let me reposition them. I had quite a bit of nicely painted figures in my old Tau army, but I had no problem selling and giving them away. I even had a friend throw my nicely-painted harlequin crisis suit into a wall just to see how many pieces it broke into.
You can usually tell about the person you are playing if they are in the right frame of mind or not.(usually) And I didn't start this thing so that we could make fun of those that DID have other things on their mind and the loss of a game was the final straw.
Right. I probably wouldn't play 'em anyway cuz they probably wouldn't be fun to play against. But to whine that you're in that state of mind (when you shouldn't be playing), to want others to recognize it, and to play anyway?

I completely ripped a guys Eldar army to shreds in a tournament he got so mad that he stole my codex while I wasn't looking. He whined and complained trying to find anyway he could to prove I cheated because there was no way I could have beaten him like that and played fair. He played the last two rounds all frowny and such. Mainly a sore loser story but one of my favorites.

Yeah, I cried a couple of times when playing my first army back in... 1999 I think.
It was a 2k IG vs. CSM Battle.
My "OMGBU77S3X" tactic was to rush the enemy with Tanks, then march my soldiers like they were blind or had no sense of direction in a straight line at the enemy.
One time, in a tournament (bear in my these were early days, and I think this was my 9th ever game), this game versus the CSMs popped up.
So, Tanks roll in. I didn't really look at the TWELVE Missile Launchers in front of me. My tanks didn't make it past turn 2.
Only choice now, once my pride and joy were eliminated, march in. Hey ho, let's go.
12 Inches in, Bolters open up. No cover, 50% Casualties.
24 Inches in, I'm charged. No survivors. I didn't manage to kill a SINGLE marine. I blubbed hard.
Three weeks ago I borrowed an army from a good friend to have a go with. It featured two of the Bassy IG squadrons. Needless to say, in an open pitched battle, his Tau stood no Chance against my Earthshakers! Yeah, over in two turns of indirect shooting, no jokes. I wooped, jumped in the air, did a forward flip (almost got kicked out for that.), and screamed "HOORAH!". I think I was drunk.
So this 14 year old I'm playing starts the waterworks. It was pretty shameful of me. So, I bought him a coke, and all was well.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

At the time I had yet to start my Iron Warriors force. I was playing a World Eaters army. He just didn't expect to get trashed in close combat so quickly.
I started Iron Warriors when I realized I could have my favorite tank (Basilisk) with my Chaos Marines. Plus Storm of Iron got me hooked.

Ok, I realize its a little late to post here but I have the best crying story ever so I was at this GW and was painting some stuff (I like painting there for the atmosphere) and I was talking to some guy and after a while he says "I bet you could never beat me in a apoc game but like I said I was painting (Stuff I had bought that day) so I didn't have my army but I really wanted to prove this guy wrong so I asked GW for one of their generic or practice armies and so we played and obviously I kicked the crap out of this guy after that was one of the funniest thing I had ever witnessed in my life. What the guy did was slide his army off of the table right into his case (letting them fall all over and what not) slams his case and starts leaving the store in tears then he turns around comes to me and just mutters "you suck" (simple right). Ohh and did I mention that guy was a regular in that store but after that he came in mabye once a month. I should mention the guy was like 15.
