I follow it for my army except grenades. Works well for me. I do prefer it for other players but as long as they tell what everything counts as and keep with it, it doesn't bother me.

I try to put most of the vehicle options on my vehicles and just point them as needed when I play. Minor war gear from the armory, back when I had one, like laspistols replaced by bolt pistols, I model for what I use most often and try to buy it whenever possible. But as far as major items, like troops and weapons, I WYSIWYG and just bite the bullet for what I don't have.

Honestly, I follow it for I would probably forget that this Skorcha' model is actually being used as a Loota'... and this Ork Nob actually has a power claw, not a choppa/slugga... Well, you get the point. When I'm playing with friends we joke around and tend to forget what's-what so WYSIWYG is quite helpful...

I try my best to stick to WYSIWYG for my own force but I don't demand it of my opponents. There are a couple of notable exceptions:

1) I might use a special character as a normal character (i.e. Azrael for a generic chapter master) because the models are cool. If I do that though I make sure my generic character is equipped as closely as possible to the special character.

2) I own the codex for armies I don't collect. Sometime I feel like playing those so I will proxy. In this case I try to keep it as close as possible - tactical marines standing for bolter armed Sisters of Battle for example. Sometimes it does drive my a bit batty though. One disaster of a game was a proxy Imperial Guard army: the marines are platoon 1, the genestealers are platoon 2, the termagants are platoon 3 -- it was a real mess that I don't ever want to repeat

I'm a stickler for wysiwyg, frankly. Not the little stuff like grenades (but those should be declared before the battle, obviously) but all of the major wargear should be in place.
Your opponent should provide you with his army list and, if you ask for it, Codex, so you could make sure he's not setting you up (I speak from experience )
Proxies are out of the question.

I agree with the people who said the visual aspect is a big part of what makes the hobby. If you just want to push plastic minis around, there's chess. Or snakes n ladders, if you want to involve dice...
A Dreadnought with a MM is not a Dreadnought with a Lascannon.
Being clear about this sort of thing speeds up the game and avoids frustration on both sides.

Here here. If you don't have the model and I'm not your friend, please don't ask me to let you proxy for things you have, but aren't exactly what you want, like in your example. You should always have your codex and a clear copy of what is on the board (I don't always have an army list for every battle, but I do always have a list of all my units and a list of what I am using with their points values). I don't hand my list over to my opponent before the battle, and I am not going to give them an explanation about all my units (unless a unit has something small like grenades, or if my Russ is not actually armed with the Hunter Killer Missile that is modeled onto it) unless they ask independently. I play guard, I have almost 100 models on the board in over twelve units, all detailed and modeled with what they have.

Part of the game is being able to point out what is different among models, what it is, and what it does. If you can't identify what it is, be able to ask your opponent. It seems a bit unfair, but I expect no more or less from my opponent.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

For WYSIWYG, how the hell do I model on bolters for my officers and commissars in an IG army? It's a bit hard if they're metal, or if they have to HOLD it with both hands =S Any ideas?

Any for the grenade part, it comes standard with all the IG troops, pretty much. Dot hey still need to be modeled, or only if you have specialty grenades such as melta/krak?

They dont have to be holding the weapon in question. It just has to be represented on their model (unless an inquisitor, see DH codex) so you could take a bolter and put it on their back and since its represented, they can use it.

As for grenades, I dont have mine modeled, whether Krak or Frag or Melta, although I'll work on that after I finish my army up anyways.

Make two tiny spheres out of green stuff, then glue them onto where the necrons keep their souls (the place where their legs meet).

General consensus is that compulsary equipment doesn't have to be modelled.

e.g. all space marines have bolt pistols, frag & krak.

Also, not modelling them means that models with special grenades (e.g. melta) will stand out more.

I use it, always, up to grenades.
However, melta bombs should be viewable.

In real life, a Phylactery is a small box containing a tiny scroll of sacred writing, and is normally apart of a cloth band that is either worn on the head of a priest (with the box on his forehead) and on his right arm (upper bicep, near the shoulder with the box just below the deltoid). In D&D, its a small jar or box used to store the soul of a lich. For Necrons, any small yet ornate object will do; personally, I'd just put a tiny square of plastic on the Lord's forehead and be done with it.

The 40k computer game (Dawn of War) merely shows the rib cage as being colored a gold tint, rather than the typical steel grey.
Not very creative, but easy to do I suppose.

As a player whose army is primarily Sisters of Battle, it's hard to adhere too strictly to WYSIWYG, particularly on Sisters Superior -- all the models are metal, and while there are special weapons models available, you just can't get many of the combinations you'll field. I'll make my Sister Superior clear, and provide a list/be happy to point out that she counts as holding a combi-flamer rather than cutting the bolter out, modding the bolter, and then basically resculpting her hands from scratch. Or replacing the plasma pistol on all the chainsword-and-PP-wielding Sister Suprerior models out there...)

As such, I'm not likely to bring it to any WYSIWYG tournaments anytime soon, and that's just something I've accepted.

I guess, the key for me is consistency (if I'm trying running multi-meltas instead of heavy bolters in my Retributors and haven't purchased the 4 multi-melta figs yet, I'm not going to mix some hb as WYSIWYG and others as counts-as), pointing out clearly during deployment, and ease of identification.

I'd also not go for extended proxying. As was said on page two, eventually I want to see your unit properly represented if it's reasonable. At the same time, I'm not going to demand you sculpt from scratch, or kitbash from twelve models if an appropriate thing just isn't available. Make it unique so I don't have to guess which model is the one that's not WYSIWYG, and I'll be happy.

you can be a bit flexible with it but nothing rediculous.

Hehe, I'd hate to have to play with that guy.

I will be attempting WYSIWYG, but super glue and plastic models prefer to break if you try and pry them appart. Or perhaps I should use an Xacto knife to cut through the glue?

The guys in my group are really cool about it, we proxy stuff all the time. Most people are cool enough to realize it takes alot of time, effort, and money, to convert metal steel legion models. But I have run into the occasional guy that plays by it to a T. Either I refuse to play him, or I play it right back, if his squad has grenades, and bolters, I want to see them on every model.

I don't mind people proxying one thing for another within reason such as Leman Russ variants or the like as long as it's been clearly explained first.

Truthfully, while playing around with Mech Gaurd I've had to proxy some Meltaguns, though they are the only special weapons in the list, so hopefully a few flamers mixed in will be excused, but going out and obtaining 8 more Meltaguns right now is a bit much.

I have played with a guy like that, at a GT. I was really wanting to punch him by the end...acutally, that does not go far enough. He tried to play an ork buggy as a battlewagon, a normal Nob squad as mega-armoured and some other stuff and I was just like, OK, well that Sentinel is a Titan and my Lascannon HWT is a Leman Russ. I think he wanted to punch me too after that..
