I have an idea for a great sci-fi universe stewing in my head. The basic premise is a system of five planets and a few moons on which various factions are constantly fighting to control the technologies left behind by an ancient race of creators.
It *could* work someday.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

depends on how you made it, but i could see helping/investing in that type of game IF you started a company to make it.

If we do start out a Dakka Dakka investment group may I nominate Yakface and HBMC to be designers? Or even Yakface as a board member? That would be the day.....

Dakka having its own investment group or game has to be amongst the greatest or worst ideas on the internet.

Why not HBMC? He already does some rules design if you beleive him about his group using alternate rules. ( and I thought he was working on a rewrite of the Guard Codex but that may have been someone else)

Hay , i know this thread is a bit old but i think this investment thing is worth a shot, im sure there are enough people on this forum willing to put in enough money to get at least 5% if not more, and if we where seriosly considering doing this then why not get oither forums involved ie warseer, im sure a number of other groups would be interested, and for those out there who think that there money would be thrown away, just think of the profits you could make, GW is a profitable buisness so even if you only owned one share you will make a return.

I don't think so... Check here:
http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/historical.asp?ric=GAW.L
The way you make money off the stock market is buy selling the stock or dividends. According to this chart, the last time GW stock paid dividends was back in early '07, less than $5.00 a share (and share prices were over $300 then, so even if it paid $5 on a quarterly basis we're talking over a decade to turn a profit. In this case, though, it hasn't paid a dividend for a while, unless the data here iss wrong.
(For the record, I work for a company that does financial stuff. I probably could get better access to this data but I'm an IT guy and stay away from the financial numbers as I admit I'm not an expert in that area.)

Hmm, at the very least we could try and buy the IP when it eventually goes under. It has happened at least once that I know of to MMORPGs in the past, after the company goes bankrupt the fans pool their money and buy the IP then rehost the servers/create a new updated game.

I'm pretty sure that should the company actually get to the point that they'd consider selling off their IP assets, someone a bit better off than "the fans" will snatch it up. I can think of a few offhand that would possibly be interested in it:
1. THQ (Relic's parent company): at this point I suspect that the DOW series is capable of standing on its own in the video game market without GW fanboys being a required target audience.
2. Hasbro/WOTC: I'm not sure that this would turn out to be a SUCCESSFUL acquisition, but Hasbro has certainly shown a tendency to want to snatch up failing game companies, distill their essences into a couple core products, and let the rest rot away. They'd probably turn 40k into a CMG or something.
3. Blizzard-Activision (or whatever they're calling the company these days): pure irony value, and I could see them doing it just because.
4. Any number of the bigger video gaming companies that feels they could leverage the IP into a line of churn-em-out shooters/tacticals/MMO's (see, also: EA, Take2, Microsoft).
I don't think that anyone would be particularly interested in the plastic-and-lead assets, though: an expensive hobby that's a niche market (fantasy wargaming) within a niche market ("nerdy" gaming such as RPGs and such) within a niche market (recreational gaming as a whole, including mass-market stuff like Monopoly and Uno) is not exactly a bread-winner. Without the IP, though, you'd just be buying a bunch of mold-making devices which are probably worth plenty to some non-gaming company making widgets.
If the people at Dakka are REALLY interested in taking a shot at community development of a game, though, I've been giving thought to public-domaining the game I published some years ago. I think that there could be some interesting ways to allow a large community to create/update a game without it turning into a huge mishmash of "hey, I think it would be cool if..." (such as having a few select members serving as a final approval/guidance committee similar to how open-source software products tend to run). This wouldn't have any actual selling ability, nor would it involve miniatures being produced directly, but it would certainly be an interesting experiment in applying Open Source Software ideals to a pen-and-paper environment.
